The NYSESLAT is specifically designed to assess the English language skills of ELLs in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It does not evaluate academic performance in other subjects or compare students with native English speakers.
The results help schools decide if students require additional English as a New Language (ENL) services or if they are ready to exit the program. It is not related to academic grading or testing exemptions.
Only students classified as ELLs are required to take the NYSESLAT to monitor their progress in acquiring English language skills. It is not mandatory for native English speakers or all students.
The NYSESLAT focuses on assessing how well ELLs are developing their English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It does not evaluate problem-solving, memorization, or native language abilities.
Schools must use NYSESLAT results to comply with state and federal laws (such as ESSA) requiring the monitoring and support of English Language Learners' progress. It is not a ranking tool or a replacement for other tests.
