Australian citizenship is a privilege that offers enormous rewards. By becoming an Australian citizen, you are joining a unique national community. Our country has been built on the combined contributions of our Indigenous people and those who came later from all over the world. We celebrate this diversity and at the same time, strive for a unified and harmonious nation. The strength of the Australian community means that we work together to solve problems and to make Australia the great country that it is. We have a stable system of government and Australians respect the authority and laws of the government. Our stability, our culture, and our laws have been shaped by our history. By joining the Australian community, you will inherit this history and you will be in a position to contribute to it.

Australia is an ancient land. It is vast and unique. It is a country of rainforests and woodlands; golden

beaches and dry deserts. Our Indigenous cultures are the oldest continuing cultures in the world. We are also a young nation; a nation of migrants. European settlement in Australia began in 1788 and we continue to welcome new migrants today. People from more than 200 countries have made Australia their home. As a result, our society is one of the most diverse in the world. Australia successfully combines ethnic and cultural diversity with national unity. Citizenship is the bond that unites us all.

More than 1644 responses were received with 60 percent of respondents supporting the introduction of a citizenship test. A further 25 percent of respondents were opposed to the introduction of a formal citizenship test and the remaining 15 percent did not state a clear view either way.

On 11 December 2006, the Government announced its intention to introduce a citizenship test and values statements for permanent and selected temporary visa applicants.

The Australian Citizenship Amendment (Citizenship Testing) Bill 2007 was introduced into Parliament on 30 May 2007 and was passed by the Parliament on 12 September 2007. The citizenship test was implemented on 1 October 2007.

Birth Certificate to Be Australian Citizen

A certificate is a crucial document that proves your date of birth and birth name.

Unfortunately, this document is also the basis of all problems. If you were born within the early 80s or before in India like me, you’ll understand the pain behind that statement. Birth certificates some time past weren’t as professionally maintained as now. In rural areas, registering birth itself was an enormous thing including issuing a certificate. Even where they were issued, they might be without the name of the child or without the complete name.

Most of the time, it wont to be handwritten, that too in regional language and hardly legible. I remember my certificate was a pink sheet that felt more sort of a hospital discharge card. By the time it had been needed for Australian PR, it had been half torn and therefore the handwriting was illegible with blotches of ink.

If you’ve got a certificate, fantastic! You should hank your luck and your parents, but luck mostly.

Make sure the language of this is English. If not, you should get it translated to English from a NAATI-approved translator.

No Birth Certificate? No Problem to get your Citizenship

If you don’t have a certificate though, it’s best to use it for a reissue of certificate to the municipality where your birth was registered. as long as it’s the Indian office we are talking about, it’d take a month or two to urge a replica of the certificate. That’s the simplest case by the way.

Since birth certificates are usually issued within the regional language, just confirm that you simply specifically invite the language of the certificate to be English when applying. That way you’ll have a certificate in both, English and therefore the regional language.

If you can’t get the certificate, the simplest thing is to call the Department of Home Affairs helpline and explain things . they’re the proper people to advise you.

Different people have different experiences. Some got approval to support the category 10 mark sheet or school leaving certificate, while others apply for the certificate from VFS supported their passport. So I won’t recommend one thing over the opposite. Call the helpline and follow their advice.

The birth certificate problems aren’t over yet to get Australian Citizenship

Docuemnts to get Australian citizenship

One minor issue with the Indian Birth certificates is that they don’t mention the complete name of the kid (even the newer ones). So child names are going to be written separately and parent names are going to be mentioned during a different section. Though this didn’t create a problem on my behalf during the citizenship appointment, it caused a minor hiccup later during the Australian passport application.

Sometimes, the Indian birth certificates, especially the older ones, don’t bear the child’s name in the least.

Though it’s understandable within the Indian context where we take ages to call the baby, it’s baffling to the outsider. So if your certificate doesn’t have your name, it’d also be just a bit of blank paper. it’s no value whatsoever. therefore the neatest thing is to urge another certificate issued from India with all the small print or call the helpline to ascertain if you’ll use other documents just like the 10th mark sheet or school leaving certificate.

Another common problem is that the name on the certificate doesn’t exactly match with the one on your passport. this is often a really common issue with Indian names.

For example, the certificate may have the name Anil Kumar Sharma and on the passport, the name will be Anil K Sharma. Though this seems like a minor issue, for a citizenship officer it’d alright to appear as if you’re impersonating another person with an identical name. So it’s best to either get your certificate corrected or to make an affidavit stating that both names are actually of 1 and therefore the same person. Again call the helpline and ensure which course of action is acceptable in your case.

Form 1195 Identity Declaration to be an Australian Citizen

Form 1195 may be a simple form. You need to just provide your name, address, birth date, and application TRN. The pain is getting it certified. I had faced an identical issue while getting this form certified for my newborn babies.

Three things that make it hard:

  1. a) you would need to urge it certified from an individual belonging to a selected occupation like doctor or tax accountant,
  2. b) The person has got to be an Australian citizen,
  3. c) He/she must know you for a minimum of one year

It’s the mixture of those three conditions which makes it so difficult to seek out the proper person.

I knew many Australian citizens who knew me for quite a year but they didn’t belong to the list of occupations mentioned. On the opposite hand, there have been people that knew me for quite a year, like my doctor, but he wasn’t an Australian citizen. Lastly, there have been people like Justice of the Peace who was authorized to certify and were Australian citizen, but he didn’t know me for one year.

It’s like finding an honest movie on Netflix. You get movies with an honest star cast but an idiotic plot. Or, you get an excellent story but poor direction. I urge the Australian government to try to do one among two things for us, migrants:

  • Allow Australian citizen from your workplace to certify your identity or,
  • Arrange a gathering with one among the professionals listed on the identity form once we migrate to Australia. That way they can’t deny that they don’t know me for a year.

Anyway, back to reality. Out of the long list of 38 occupations, below were my 5 best options:

Anyway, here were our 5 best options from a list of 38 occupations:

  1. a) Justice of the Peace

As it came out, one among the administrators from the corporate where I worked, was JP. Who might be a more apt person to certify my identity than my very own employer? Unfortunately, he went on a vacation, and that I didn’t want to delay my application thanks to that.

  1. b) Medical Practitioner

It would be a good choice but if not an Australian, too bad!

  1. c) Pharmacist

The pharmacist refused identity certification saying they don’t roll in the hay. However, a number of my friends told me that they got their form certified from the Pharmacy shops. I’m unsure how. Maybe some pharmacy shops do, some don’t. Okay, next!

d)Tax accountant through which I filed my tax returns

  1. e) A full-time teacher

Thank god! The tax accountant agreed to certify the identity of our family members. Since we filed tax returns together with her for a couple of years, there was no doubt of her not knowing us for quite 1 year.

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) to get Australian citizenship

Not most are required to supply a Police Clearance Certificate or PCC. it’s usually needed if you stayed outside of Australia for 12 months or more and if you stayed in one country for 90 days or more. you’ll know whether you would like PCC or not at the top of the citizenship application because the system will show you the documents required. If PCC is mentioned together with the documents, you would like to supply one.

As for me, I didn’t need PCC but my wife was asked to supply one. Take a look at the article explaining the process to get an Indian PCC, if interested. Be aware that it usually takes up to 4 to 6 weeks to get PCC.

How to prepare Australian citizenship test?

How to prepare Australian citizenship test

Here we revealed one of our successful students’ experiences exactly.

The officer asked me for my certificate, passport, and driver’s license. These were the sole documents she was curious about. She never even checked out the Aadhar card or rates notice. I hoped that a minimum of she is going to have a glance at the Identity declaration form.

Based on the experiences of people, I used to be expecting an issue or two. Something like, why I came to Australia or a couple of questions on citizenship itself like what were the advantages of being an Australian citizen. But it had been mostly a silent (and boring) interview. the sole thing she asked was to verify my address and date of birth.

If your interviewer is chatty, then  you would possibly get questions like:

  • How long have you ever been living in Australia?
  • What is your area of work?
  • What does one like about Australia?
  • Are you married? does one have kids?

In short, it’s more of a conversation than an interrogation. So, try to relax and talk normally.

The officer asked whether my wife has had her citizenship test because, within the citizenship application, I had opted to possess the citizenship ceremony with my wife. I told her that she didn’t receive the test invitation yet.

After doing the required verification and scanning the documents, she asked me to seem within the camera which was affixed into the wall to my right. She took my picture and returned the documents and informed me that she has initiated the police verification.

That was the top of the citizenship interview. She then asked me to attend within the lobby for the citizenship test.
