The NYSESLAT measures English proficiency across five levels: Entering, Emerging, Transitioning, Expanding, and Commanding. These levels track the progress of English Language Learners (ELLs).
The Commanding level indicates that a student is proficient in English and no longer needs specialized English as a New Language (ENL) services. This is the highest level on the NYSESLAT.
The Entering level represents the earliest stage of English language acquisition, where students can understand and use only simple words and phrases.
At the Expanding level, students demonstrate a good command of English, allowing them to participate in classroom discussions and complete academic tasks with occasional support or scaffolding.
The Emerging level shows that the student is starting to use English for social and academic purposes but still requires substantial guidance to succeed.
