Question 1

Which of the following stages of cocaine addiction development is NOT typical?

Accepted Answer

Isolated use

Answer

The development of cocaine addiction typically progresses through stages like experimental use, social/recreational use, dysfunctional use, and eventually compulsive use. 'Isolated use' is not a recognized or typical stage in this progression. Addiction is characterized by a pattern of problematic, repeated use despite negative consequences, which usually involves more than just isolated instances.

Question 2

Which of the following is TRUE regarding people who willingly seek out drug treatment?

Accepted Answer

They are at varying stages of change readiness

Answer

Individuals who willingly seek drug treatment are often at various stages of change readiness, as described by the Transtheoretical Model of Change. They may be in contemplation, preparation, or even early action, but are not necessarily fully committed or ready for immediate, complete change. Counselors must assess each client's stage of change to tailor interventions effectively.

Question 3

What does a cutoff score mean when it comes to client screening?

Accepted Answer

The threshold above which a more thorough assessment is indicated

Answer

In client screening, a cutoff score is a predetermined threshold on a screening instrument. If a client's score meets or exceeds this cutoff, it indicates a higher probability of a particular issue, such as a substance use disorder. This signals that a more comprehensive and in-depth assessment is necessary to confirm a diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Question 4

What is the suicide risk for people receiving treatment for alcoholism?

Accepted Answer

Ten times as high as high among the general population

Answer

Research consistently shows that individuals receiving treatment for alcoholism face a significantly elevated risk of suicide. This risk is estimated to be approximately ten times higher than among the general population. Factors contributing to this heightened risk include co-occurring mental health disorders like depression, impulsivity, and the disinhibiting effects of alcohol.

Question 5

When is a client with a co-occurring disorder assessed?

Accepted Answer

Regularly over time

Answer

Clients with co-occurring disorders (substance use and mental health disorders) should be assessed regularly over time. Their conditions are often dynamic, with symptoms and treatment needs fluctuating. Ongoing, integrated assessment ensures that treatment plans remain responsive to their evolving needs and promotes better outcomes for both disorders.
