What is the official ASVAB practice test and where can I access it?

The official ASVAB practice test is available through the ASVAB Career Exploration Program at official.asvab.com and through the Army's free March2Success platform. These provide full-length practice tests across all nine subtests, scored against the same normative population used for the real exam. Your recruiter can also provide official practice materials and may administer a pre-screening test called the ASVAB-PQ to estimate your likely score.

How are ASVAB scores calculated and what is the AFQT?

Your AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score is a percentile derived from four subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. The formula is AFQT = AR + MK + (2 ร— VE), where VE equals WK plus PC. This percentile is compared against a 1997 national reference population. Beyond the AFQT, branch-specific line scores combine different subtest results to determine MOS eligibility.

What ASVAB score do I need to join the military?

Minimum AFQT requirements vary by branch: Army requires 31, Marine Corps 32, Navy 35, Air Force and Space Force 36, and Coast Guard 40. These are the absolute minimums, but many desirable MOS positions require significantly higher scores. Aiming for 50 or above is strongly recommended to maximize your career choices. Some waivers exist for scores as low as 26 during high-recruiting periods, but these significantly limit your job options.

How long should I study for the ASVAB?

Most candidates benefit from six to eight weeks of structured daily study, allocating 60 to 90 minutes per day. Candidates with significant gaps in math or science may need ten to twelve weeks. The key is consistent practice with timed conditions rather than marathon study sessions. Complete a diagnostic practice test in week one to identify your weakest areas, then front-load your schedule with the subtests that need the most improvement.

Can I retake the ASVAB if I am not satisfied with my score?

Yes. You must wait at least one calendar month after your first attempt, another month after your second, and six months after any subsequent tests. There is no official limit on how many times you can take the ASVAB. However, some recruiters pay close attention to retesting frequency, so it is best to be well-prepared before each sitting. Retesting with a lower score will not automatically cancel your previous result.

What is the difference between the CAT-ASVAB and the paper ASVAB?

The CAT-ASVAB (computer-adaptive test) is administered at MEPS and adapts question difficulty based on your responses. It contains fewer questions (approximately 145 total across subtests vs. the paper version's 225) but takes about the same time because adaptive questions require more careful thought. You cannot skip or return to previous questions on the CAT-ASVAB. The paper MET-Site ASVAB is given at satellite locations and allows you to move between questions within a subtest's time limit.

What are ASVAB line scores and how do they differ from the AFQT?

Line scores are branch-specific composite scores derived from various subtest combinations that determine eligibility for specific military jobs. The Army uses ten line scores including GT, EL, ST, and CL. Unlike the AFQT, which is universal across branches, line scores vary by service. A high AFQT qualifies you to enlist, but matching line scores to MOS requirements determines which career fields you can actually enter. Is the ASVAB hard to pass?

Passing the ASVAB at the minimum threshold is achievable for most candidates with two to four weeks of focused preparation. However, scoring high enough to qualify for competitive technical MOS positions is significantly more challenging. The mathematics and science sections present the steepest difficulty curve for candidates who have been out of school for several years. What happens if I fail the ASVAB?

Scoring below your branch's minimum AFQT does not permanently disqualify you from military service. You must wait the required retesting interval and then sit the exam again. How does the ASVAB compare to the SAT or ACT?

The ASVAB tests a broader range of vocational and technical knowledge than the SAT or ACT, including mechanical comprehension, electronics, and auto and shop information. The verbal and math components are roughly comparable in content to the SAT at a moderate difficulty level. Strong SAT math scores generally predict strong ASVAB MK and AR performance. However, the ASVAB's technical subtests require additional preparation that no amount of SAT or ACT studying fully addresses.
