Worked examples: how to reason through NREMT questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: The three-flap valve located on the right side of the heart is the:

1. Tri-valve
2. Mitral valve
3. Tricuspid valve
4. Triluminar valve

Answer: C. Tricuspid valve

Explanation:

Correct: C, Tricuspid valve. The tricuspid valve sits between the right atrium and the right ventricle. Its name comes from its three flaps, or cusps. When the right ventricle contracts, the valve closes so deoxygenated blood cannot flow back into the right atrium.

• A, Tri-valve: not an anatomical term. It is a distractor built to sound like the right answer.
• B, Mitral valve: a real valve, but it is on the left side of the heart, between the left atrium and left ventricle.
• D, Triluminar valve: not a heart structure.

Rule to remember: the right side has the tricuspid valve and the left side has the mitral valve. If an option is not a real anatomical name, cross it out first.

Example 2

Question: Which of the following is the most effective method for administering ventilations to an apneic patient?

1. Two person bag-valve-mask.
2. FROPVD
3. One person bag-valve-mask.
4. Mouth-to-mouth.

Answer: A. Two person bag-valve-mask.

Explanation:

Correct: A, Two person bag-valve-mask. With two rescuers, one can use both hands to hold the mask seal and keep the airway open while the other squeezes the bag. A good seal means less air leaks and each breath delivers a steadier volume.

• B, FROPVD: a flow-restricted, oxygen-powered ventilation device can ventilate a patient, but it gives less feel for lung compliance and can push air into the stomach. It is not the first choice here.
• C, One person bag-valve-mask: it is hard to hold a tight seal with one hand while squeezing with the other, so air leaks are common.
• D, Mouth-to-mouth: it exposes the rescuer to body fluids and delivers less oxygen.

Rule to remember: mask seal comes first. The more hands you have on the seal, the better the ventilation.

Example 3

Question: What is considered a potential hazard at a scene?

1. Clean environment.
2. Downed power lines
3. Secure hospital setting.
4. Routine transfer.

Answer: B. Downed power lines

Explanation:

Correct: B, Downed power lines. A downed line can electrify the ground and anything touching it, and the risk is invisible. During scene size-up you identify it, keep yourself and bystanders well away, and wait for the power company to make the area safe before you approach.

• A, Clean environment: this describes the absence of hazards, so it does not answer the question.
• C, Secure hospital setting: a controlled environment, not a scene hazard.
• D, Routine transfer: a type of call, not a danger in itself.

Rule to remember: scene safety comes before patient care. If a question asks what you do first at a scene with a hazard, the answer is usually to recognise it and stay clear, not to rush to the patient.

How to use these practice tests

Start with an untimed run of the NREMT Practice Test to see where you stand. Sort each miss into an official content area: Scene Size-up and Safety, Primary Assessment, Secondary Assessment, Patient Treatment and Transport, or Operations. That list tells you where to spend your time.

Next, work your weak areas with the topic sets: airway and breathing, cardiology, trauma, medical and operations. After each set, read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right, and write the rule as a short sentence. For each miss, check your course textbook and the NREMT candidate handbook. Our questions are written by us and are not real exam items, so learn the concept, not our wording.

Many items list several reasonable actions, so practise picking the best answer rather than just a correct one. In the last days before your exam, take mixed sets like the NREMT EMT Practice Test in a quiet room under a timer. Confirm your ATT is still inside its 90 days, and review the Pearson VUE or OnVUE check-in rules for your appointment.
