CDL Basic Vehicle Control Skills and Backing

Question 1

Which backing method is preferred for a commercial vehicle whenever you have the choice?

Accepted Answer

Sight-side (driver-side) backing

Answer

Backing toward the driver's side gives you a direct view along the side of the vehicle, so it is safer than blind-side backing, which relies on mirrors alone.

Question 2

What does the "GOAL" rule remind you to do before backing?

Accepted Answer

Get Out And Look

Answer

GOAL stands for Get Out And Look. Walking around the vehicle lets you check clearances and hazards behind you before you back.

Question 3

While backing a tractor-trailer, how should you move the steering wheel to make the rear of the trailer go in a particular direction?

Accepted Answer

Turn the top of the wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go

Answer

Turning the top of the steering wheel toward the side you want the rear of the trailer to move makes it go that way, which is the opposite of the way a car behaves when backing.

Question 4

What speed should you use when backing a commercial vehicle?

Accepted Answer

The slowest speed possible

Answer

Back as slowly as you can, using idle speed, so you can react to what you see and correct your path.

Question 5

Why should you use a helper or spotter when backing if one is available?

Accepted Answer

Because you cannot see directly behind the vehicle

Answer

A spotter can see the blind areas behind and around the vehicle. Agree on hand signals before you begin, and stop if you lose sight of the spotter.
