Developing opportunities for elite level undergraduate students to undertake research from the start of their studies has led The Australian National University to establish a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours), or PhB degree. The program is a unique and innovative undergraduate degree, combining a rigorous curriculum with the flexibility of conducting research.
The Bachelor of Philosophy (PhB) degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is an interdisciplinary degree that combines studies in three subjects: philosophy, politics, and economics. This type of bachelor’s degree is designed for students interested in developing the analytical skills needed to succeed in graduate school and career advancement. It is also ideal for future politicians, lawyers, and business leaders who want to be able to reason at a high level about political and economic decisions.
Previously, the College of Arts and Social Sciences PhB was heavily promoted as an undergraduate research degree. However, low enrolments have forced the program to be disestablished. While the PhB degree will no longer be offered to new students, current CASS PhB students will be able to finish their degrees until 2026. The university will then replace the PhB with a new advanced degree. However, it is not clear what that replacement will be. The report includes 12 recommendations that could be implemented to keep the PhB relevant for students. The recommendations include improving marketing of the degree to make it more appealing to prospective students.
