RBT Certification 2026: How to Become a Registered Behavior Technician

What Is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional credentialed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) who implements behavior analytic services under the direct supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). The RBT credential, established by the BACB in 2014, standardized the training and competency requirements for front-line behavior technicians working in applied behavior analysis (ABA) settings.

RBTs work directly with individuals receiving ABA therapy — primarily children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), though ABA is also used with individuals with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and in other behavioral health contexts. RBT responsibilities include: implementing skill acquisition programs developed by the supervising BCBA (teaching communication, daily living skills, social skills, and academic skills); implementing behavior reduction plans (addressing self-injurious behavior, aggression, and other challenging behaviors); collecting data on client performance; and reporting observations to the supervising BCBA. RBTs do not design programs or make clinical decisions — they implement programs designed by and under the direct supervision of a BCBA.

The RBT credential has become a standard hiring requirement for behavior technician positions at ABA therapy companies across the United States. Most ABA providers prefer or require RBT certification for their line-level therapy staff, and the credential demonstrates a minimum standard of training and competency in applied behavior analysis fundamentals. The growing demand for ABA services for individuals with autism has created strong and consistent job market demand for RBT-certified professionals.

RBT Eligibility Requirements

The BACB sets specific eligibility requirements that must be met before a candidate can apply for RBT certification. These requirements are designed to ensure that candidates have the educational foundation and supervised practical experience needed to work safely and effectively as behavior technicians.

Age and Education Requirements

RBT candidates must be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). There is no college degree requirement for the RBT credential — this is one of the distinctions between the RBT credential and the BCBA credential (which requires a master's degree). Many ABA employers prefer candidates with some college coursework in psychology, education, or human services, but this is an employer preference rather than a BACB requirement. The accessible educational threshold makes the RBT credential an entry-level pathway into the behavior analysis field for candidates who have not yet completed college education.

Background Check

Candidates must complete a criminal background check. The BACB does not specify a background check provider — the check must be conducted by the RBT's employer or supervisory organization as part of the employer's own requirements. Any history of criminal charges related to abuse, neglect, or exploitation of children or vulnerable adults typically results in ineligibility for the RBT credential and disqualification from working in ABA settings.

Supervising BCBA Requirement

RBT candidates must be working under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA throughout the certification process — and must continue working under supervision after certification. The RBT credential does not permit independent practice. Ongoing supervision from a qualified behavior analyst is a requirement of the credential, not just a hiring condition. RBT candidates who are not currently working with a supervising BCBA cannot complete the competency assessment component of the certification process.

RBT Training Requirements

Before sitting for the RBT exam, candidates must complete a 40-hour training program covering the RBT Task List content and pass a competency assessment conducted by a BCBA or BCaBA. Both requirements must be completed before the BACB will allow a candidate to apply for the RBT exam.

40-Hour Training Program

The 40-hour training program covers the content areas of the RBT Task List, which is the BACB's specification of the knowledge and skills RBTs are expected to demonstrate. The RBT Task List covers six content areas: Measurement (data collection methods, graphing, reporting); Skill Acquisition (discrete trial training, naturalistic teaching, reinforcement procedures, prompt hierarchies); Behavior Reduction (function of behavior, behavior intervention plan implementation, crisis procedures); Documentation and Reporting; Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice; and Ethics. Training programs are offered by ABA companies (who may provide this training as part of the hiring process for new staff), universities and community colleges with ABA-related programs, and online training providers. The BACB does not certify specific training programs — any program that covers the RBT Task List content in 40 or more hours satisfies this requirement.

Initial Competency Assessment

After completing the 40-hour training, candidates must pass an initial competency assessment conducted in person by a BCBA or BCaBA. The competency assessment is a direct observation and demonstration evaluation — the BCBA observes the candidate demonstrating specific skills from the RBT Task List with an actual client or in a role-play scenario. Skills assessed include: taking data, implementing skill acquisition programs correctly, implementing behavior reduction strategies, and professional conduct. The competency assessment is not a written test — it is a live performance evaluation. The supervising BCBA must sign off that the candidate has demonstrated competency in all assessed areas before the candidate can apply for the RBT exam.

The RBT Exam

The RBT exam is a computer-based multiple-choice examination administered at Pearson VUE test centers. The exam must be completed within 90 days of the BACB's approval of the candidate's application. Candidates have a 90-day period to schedule and sit the exam once the application is approved.

RBT Exam Format

The RBT exam consists of 75 multiple-choice questions, of which 10 are unscored pilot questions distributed throughout the exam. The 65 scored questions cover the six content areas of the RBT Task List proportionally: Measurement (12 scored questions), Skill Acquisition (24 scored questions), Behavior Reduction (12 scored questions), Documentation and Reporting (10 scored questions), Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice (6 scored questions), and Ethics (1 scored question). The time limit for the exam is 90 minutes. The minimum passing score is 85 percent of the 65 scored questions (approximately 56 correct answers).

RBT Exam Content

The RBT exam tests practical knowledge of ABA procedures as specified in the RBT Task List. Commonly tested topics include: definitions of reinforcement and punishment (positive and negative, continuous and intermittent); reinforcement schedules (fixed ratio, variable ratio, fixed interval, variable interval); prompt types and prompt fading strategies (physical, modeling, verbal, gestural prompts; least-to-most and most-to-least prompt hierarchies); discrete trial training (DTT) procedure; naturalistic teaching approaches; function-based behavior intervention (escape, attention, tangible, automatic reinforcement functions); ABC data collection (antecedent-behavior-consequence); behavior graphs and data interpretation; and professional and ethical obligations of the RBT.

Preparing for the RBT Exam

The BACB does not publish a detailed study guide for the RBT exam beyond the RBT Task List. Effective preparation includes: studying the RBT Task List content in depth using a training program, textbook, or flashcards; taking practice tests to assess knowledge and identify weak areas; reviewing the BACB's RBT Ethics Code; and ensuring practical understanding of the procedures and terms (not just definitions). Practice tests that align to the RBT Task List content distribution are the most useful preparation tool for the exam.

RBT Certification Renewal

RBT certification is renewed annually — on the same date each year as the initial certification. Annual renewal requires demonstrating ongoing competency and supervision. Failing to renew on time results in certification lapse, requiring a new application and fee to reinstate.

Annual Renewal Requirements

To renew RBT certification annually, candidates must: complete an Annual Renewal Competency Assessment (ARCA) — a live competency evaluation conducted in person by a BCBA or BCaBA that follows a similar format to the initial competency assessment; maintain ongoing supervision by a BCBA or BCaBA (5 percent of the RBT's total work hours must be supervised, with at least one supervision contact per month); complete a renewal application through the BACB's online system; and pay the annual renewal fee. The competency assessment must be completed within the 60-day window before the certification expiration date — it cannot be completed months in advance.

Supervision Requirements During Active Certification

Ongoing BCBA or BCaBA supervision is not just a renewal requirement — it is a constant requirement of active RBT certification. The BACB requires that at least 5 percent of an RBT's service delivery hours each month be supervised, with at least one in-person supervision contact per month. The supervising BCBA maintains documentation of all supervision contacts. RBTs who are not receiving adequate supervision are in violation of their certification requirements, regardless of employer policies.

The RBT Credential Requires Active Supervision — Not Just Initial Training

The RBT credential is not a standalone license that permits independent practice. An RBT must always work under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA — this is a requirement of the credential itself, not just an employer policy. At least 5% of monthly service hours must be directly supervised, with at least one supervision contact per month. RBTs who work without adequate supervision or who independently make clinical decisions are violating BACB ethics requirements.
