BCBA Certification Requirements 2025

To be eligible for BCBA certification through the BACB, candidates must meet the following requirements as of the current standards:

1. Education:

• Master's degree or higher in behavior analysis or a related field (psychology, education, special education)
• Must include coursework in the BACB's required content areas: principles of behavior, behavioral assessment, behavior-change procedures, personnel supervision, ethics
• Degree from a program with ABAI accreditation or individual coursework completion that meets BACB content requirements

2. Supervised Fieldwork Experience:

• 2,000 hours of supervised experience in behavior analysis practice (Supervised Fieldwork) — down from 1,500 under old standards
• Or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork (where supervisee works in the same setting as supervisor more intensively)
• Supervision must be provided by a currently certified BCBA or BCBA-D
• At least 10% of total fieldwork hours must be spent in direct individual supervision

3. BCBA Examination:

• Pass the BCBA examination administered by Pearson VUE at authorized testing centers
• Must apply and be approved for exam eligibility before registering with Pearson VUE

Supervised Fieldwork — How It Works

• Setting: Fieldwork can be completed in schools, ABA therapy clinics, homes, hospitals, or residential facilities — wherever ABA services are provided
• Supervisor requirements: Your supervisor must be a currently certified BCBA or BCBA-D with at least 1 year of post-certification experience and must have completed the BACB's 8-hour supervision training
• How to find fieldwork: Many candidates complete fieldwork while working as an RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) at an ABA therapy company that employs BCBAs — this is the most common pathway since employers facilitate supervised hours for staff pursuing BCBA certification
• Documentation: You must track all fieldwork hours using the BACB's Experience Verification System (EVS) — supervisor must verify hours monthly. Proper documentation is critical for exam eligibility

BCBA vs BCaBA — What's the Difference?

The BACB offers two practitioner-level certifications:

BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst):

• Graduate-level credential requiring a master's degree
• Fully independent practice — can design and oversee ABA programs, supervise BCaBAs and RBTs
• The standard credential for senior behavior analysts and clinical supervisors

BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst):

• Undergraduate-level credential requiring a bachelor's degree
• Can implement ABA programs and assist BCBAs but must practice under BCBA supervision
• Less common pathway — most who pursue it eventually complete a master's to become BCBA

RBT (Registered Behavior Technician):

• The entry-level credential — requires 40-hour training and competency assessment
• Direct service provider implementing ABA programs designed by BCBAs
• Many BCBAs begin their career as RBTs while completing their master's degree and supervised fieldwork
