Candidates must understand resistance training exercise selection across movement patterns: push, pull, hinge, squat, and core. Spotting techniques for free weight exercises are specifically tested. Program variables โ€” frequency, intensity (expressed as % 1RM, RPE, or heart rate), volume (sets ร— reps ร— load), and rest intervals โ€” must be correctly manipulated. Periodization models covered include linear, undulating (DUP), and block periodization. Exercise Science

This domain requires knowledge of muscle fiber types (I, IIa, IIx) and their metabolic and contractile characteristics. Energy systems are tested in detail: the ATP-PCr system (0โ€“10 seconds), the glycolytic system (10 seconds to 2 minutes), and the oxidative system (beyond 2 minutes), including EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption). Cardiorespiratory physiology questions focus on VO2max, lactate threshold, and training heart rate zones calculated with the Karvonen formula. Joint actions โ€” flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and rotation for all major joints โ€” are paired with muscle action types: concentric, eccentric, and isometric.

Special Populations and Safety

Emergency procedures are a high-priority area: recognizing cardiac arrest, activating the emergency action plan, performing CPR, and using an AED. The exam tests absolute versus relative contraindications to exercise, and modifications required for older adults, youth, pregnant clients, and clients with hypertension or diabetes. Candidates must distinguish delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) from injury warning signs, recognize overtraining syndrome indicators, and demonstrate knowledge of NSCA ethical guidelines and scope of practice boundaries.
