The National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) is a Philippine DepEd-administered aptitude test that helps students identify their strengths and choose the right Senior High School (SHS) track. It is given to Grade 9 students (to guide SHS strand selection) and Grade 11 students (to guide post-secondary pathways). Understanding the NCAE format and practicing each subtest is the best way to approach this important assessment.
This free NCAE practice test PDF covers all major subtests: General Scholastic Ability, Reading Comprehension, Science Process Skills, Mathematical Ability, Clerical Ability, Spatial Ability, and career strand aptitude domains. Download it, print it, and use it to sharpen your skills before exam day.

NCAE Subtest Areas Explained
General Scholastic Ability (GSA) is the core cognitive ability subtest. It measures verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning, and numerical ability — skills that predict overall academic success across all SHS tracks. Strong GSA scores favor the Academic track (STEM, ABM, HUMSS, GAS strands).
Reading Comprehension tests your ability to understand written passages in English, identify main ideas, make inferences, and determine the meaning of vocabulary in context. This subtest is critical for any strand involving research, communication, or literature.
Science Process Skills covers observation, classification, measurement, inference, prediction, and experimental design. It aligns most closely with the STEM strand but is also relevant to TVL strands in health sciences and agriculture.
Mathematical Ability tests arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation. High scores support placement in STEM and ABM (Accountancy, Business, and Management) strands. Questions range from basic computation to applied problem-solving.
Clerical Ability measures speed and accuracy in tasks like checking names, numbers, and patterns — skills directly relevant to TVL business and office administration programs.
Spatial Ability tests your capacity to visualize and mentally rotate two- and three-dimensional figures. This subtest supports placement in Industrial Arts, ICT, and Arts and Design strands.
Career Strand Aptitude Domains and SHS Track Selection
Beyond the general aptitude subtests, the NCAE includes career strand aptitude sections that measure fit for specific SHS tracks. The Academic strand domain emphasizes verbal and numerical reasoning. The Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) domain assesses aptitude for trades, agricultural technology, ICT, and home economics. The Sports track domain covers kinesthetic and physical aptitude indicators. The Arts and Design track domain tests creative and spatial reasoning.
DepEd guidance counselors use NCAE results alongside grades and student interest surveys to recommend the most suitable SHS track. While no minimum score is required to enroll in any strand, NCAE results carry significant weight in school-based placement decisions and scholarship eligibility screening.
How NCAE Scores Are Used for SHS Strand Selection
The NCAE is a guidance tool, not a gatekeeping exam. No student is barred from their preferred SHS strand based on NCAE results alone. However, schools use NCAE data as part of a holistic assessment alongside academic grades, teacher recommendations, and student interviews. Students whose NCAE profile aligns strongly with their chosen strand are more likely to thrive and may receive priority placement in competitive programs.
For Grade 11 students, NCAE results can also support scholarship applications and post-secondary pathway planning. Colleges and universities offering technical and vocational programs may use NCAE strand aptitude scores as supplementary admission criteria. Taking the exam seriously and preparing thoroughly gives you a stronger academic profile regardless of which SHS track you pursue.
