These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: If f(x) = x² - 4x, what is the axis of symmetry of the parabola?

1. x = 4
2. x = -2
3. x = 2
4. x = -4

Answer: C. x = 2

Explanation:

The correct answer is C, x = 2. For a parabola written as y = ax² + bx + c, the axis of symmetry is the vertical line x = -b divided by double a. Here a is 1 and b is -4, so the axis sits at x = 4 divided by 2, which is 2.

Option A, x = 4, forgets to divide by double a. Option B, x = -2, and option D, x = -4, come from losing the sign on b: b is negative, so minus b is positive, and the axis must be on the positive side.

Rule to remember: take minus b, divide by double a, and keep a careful eye on signs. You can check by finding the midpoint between the two x-intercepts.

Example 2

Question: A double bar graph compares enrollment: 2020 total = 2,600 (males 1,200 + females 1,400); 2021 total = 2,850 (males 1,350 + females 1,500). What is the percentage increase in total enrollment?

1. 8.5%
2. 9.6%
3. 10.5%
4. 11.2%

Answer: B. 9.6%

Explanation:

The correct answer is B, 9.6%. Percentage increase is the change divided by the original value, multiplied by 100. The original is the 2020 total of 2,600 and the new value is the 2021 total of 2,850. The change divided by 2,600, written as a percentage, comes to about 9.6%.

Option A, 8.5%, is too low and option C, 10.5%, and option D, 11.2%, are too high. None of them matches the calculation from the totals given.

Rule to remember: always divide by the starting value, and use the totals when the question asks about total enrollment, not the male or female bars on their own.

Example 3

Question: Which sentence is written in the most formal register?

1. It is anticipated that the forthcoming legislative amendment will have significant implications for trade policy.
2. We think the new law will probably change how trade works.
3. The new law is going to be a big deal for trade, apparently.
4. Everyone reckons this law will shake things up in terms of trade.

Answer: A. It is anticipated that the forthcoming legislative amendment will have significant implications for trade policy.

Explanation:

The correct answer is A. It uses an impersonal, passive style and formal vocabulary: anticipated, forthcoming, legislative amendment and implications. It also avoids first-person pronouns and casual phrases.

Option B opens with a personal view and uses plain, everyday wording such as how trade works. Option C uses an idiom, a big deal, and a hedge, apparently, both of which belong to casual speech. Option D relies on reckons and shake things up, which are colloquial.

Rule to remember: formal register favours precise, abstract vocabulary, a neutral third-person voice and no slang or idioms. Informal register is personal, conversational and loose.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official NBT site so you know your test format, whether you are writing AQL only or AQL and MAT, and whether you will write online or at a venue. Then work out your own starting point.

Take one of the broad sets first, such as the Academic Literacy or Quantitative Literacy questions and answers, without notes and under timed conditions. Mark every miss and note whether it was a knowledge gap, a reading slip or a timing problem.

Next, move to the topic sets that match your gaps. For Academic Literacy, use the inference, vocabulary in context, tone and register, and text coherence sets. For Quantitative Literacy, use data interpretation, logical reasoning and critical thinking. If you are writing MAT, work through the topic sets for functions, trigonometry, sequences, finance and calculus, writing out each step on paper.

After each set, read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right, and write the rule in a notebook in your own words. Redo missed questions a few days later without looking.

Close to test day, practise a full timed sitting so you get used to the 3 hours of writing time. Remember these questions are written by us as practice and are not real exam questions, so use the official sample material too.

NBT Past Papers and Memo: What Is Actually Available

The NBT Project (NBTP) does not publish full NBT test past papers. Each paper is reused across sittings, so complete question booklets and marking memos are never released. What the NBTP does publish is a set of exemplar questions for both the AQL and MAT tests, together with a "what to expect" guide describing question types. Anyone offering a full NBT past papers and memo pack is selling reconstructed or made-up content, not an official paper.

The practical alternative is an NBT simulation test: a timed, multiple-choice set that mirrors the real format. The AQL paper has about 75 questions over 3 hours, and the MAT paper about 60 questions over 3 hours, with no calculator allowed. What the National Benchmark Test Measures and How Universities Use It

The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is run by the National Benchmark Test Project (NBTP), based at the University of Cape Town. It does not repeat your matric exams. The National Senior Certificate (NSC) shows how well you met the Grade 12 curriculum; the NBT shows how prepared you are for the core academic literacy, quantitative literacy and mathematics demands of first-year university study.

The AQL test is written by applicants to all programmes. Its Academic Literacy section asks you to make meaning from academic text, separate main ideas from supporting detail, evaluate evidence and draw inferences. Its Quantitative Literacy section asks you to read tables, graphs and charts, combine information from several sources and carry out multi-step calculations. The MAT test, written only where a programme requires mathematics, covers surds and exponents, sequences and series, functions and transformations, trigonometric identities, analytic geometry and data interpretation.

Each test takes 3 hours: AQL in the morning and MAT in the afternoon of the same day. All Health Sciences applicants must write both. Some universities use the scores for admission alongside the NSC, while others use them to decide what learning support a student needs, so your benchmark level can affect both entry and placement.

Writing the National Benchmark Test: Test Day, Online Sessions and Missed Sittings

You only need to write the National Benchmark Test once per cycle, even if you apply to several universities: every institution you apply to can access the same NBT results, so book a session that meets your earliest faculty deadline. Two days before a venue test, the NBT Project sends an SMS and email confirming your venue. Check-in closes at 7:30 AM, and the name on your booking must match your South African ID or passport, which is checked before you write.

Bring two sharpened pencils, an eraser, lunch and water. Calculators, dictionaries, scrap paper, phones, tablets and smart watches are not allowed, and there are no bathroom breaks during each 3-hour session. Online NBT sessions run only on a laptop or desktop computer (not a phone), inside a Lockdown Browser, and a microphone is required because you are monitored throughout.

Registration is date- and site-specific: if you miss your sitting, you must book and pay again. If you are sick or injured before the test, email nbt@uct.ac.za with a hospital or police report and you can be given a make-up test at no extra cost.

How to Book the National Benchmark Test (NBT) Online

You book the National Benchmark Test online at nbt.ac.za by clicking "Book a test" and following the prompts. Before you start, have your South African ID book (or passport if you are not a citizen), the city and site where you want to write, the NBT requirements of every university you are applying to, and a test date that leaves about 4 weeks for results to come back.

The NBT Project does not tell you which test to write: each university and faculty sets that, so check whether you need AQL only or AQL plus MAT before you choose. Use your own personal email address, because all NBT communication is sent there. At the end of registration you can download or print a confirmation showing your NBT reference number, which is also your Lesaka EasyPay number for paying the fee and is used to verify payment before your results are released.

Your username is your ID or passport number. Log in with it to finish an incomplete booking, correct personal details or change your test date or site, which is allowed only until bookings close for that session. Two days before the test you will receive an SMS and an email confirming your venue.

NBT Score Interpretation

Understanding your NBT results is key to knowing your university placement status. Students may also prepare with our GRE practice test.

The NBT has no pass mark. The percentage bands above are approximate: exact cut-scores differ per test domain, and the NBT Project revises and resets its benchmarks every three years.

How to Use an NBT Practice Test: A Four-Week Plan

An NBT practice test is most useful when you treat it like the real National Benchmark Test: timed, without a calculator, and marked straight afterwards. The AQL paper gives you about 75 questions in 3 hours (roughly 2.4 minutes each) and the MAT paper about 60 questions in 3 hours (about 3 minutes each), so pace every practice set to those limits.

• Week 1 – baseline: write one timed academic literacy set and, if your faculty requires MAT, one NBT mathematics set. Note every topic where you lost marks.
• Week 2 – weak topics: drill only those areas, for example charts, tables and graphs for Quantitative Literacy, or functions and trigonometry for MAT.
• Week 3 – full-length runs: sit a 3-hour AQL simulation in the morning and, where needed, a MAT simulation in the afternoon, as on test day.
• Week 4 – review: reread the explanations for every wrong answer and redo those questions without notes.

Because results reach your NBT account about four weeks after the test, start this plan early enough that your scores arrive before your earliest university deadline.

The only official NBT practice test free download comes from the National Benchmark Test Project itself. Its What to expect page offers English exemplar questions for both the AQL and MAT tests as PDF files, plus Afrikaans versions of each. They are short samples rather than full papers, but they show the real question style and level of the National Benchmark Test.
