ExCPT Vs PTCB
Those considering a career as a pharmacy technician should know that there are two different certifications available: the PTCB and the ExCPT. While most programs like Building Blocks Services Learning Center prepare students for both, many employers prefer the PTCB certification. This is largely due to the fact that the PTCB has been around longer and enjoys a more established reputation. In addition, most employers view PTCB certification as more valid than ExCPT certification. Those who wish to take the PTCB exam should enroll in a program that is accredited by the PTCB. Additionally, they must be within 60 days of graduating from a PTCB-recognized education or training program.
In order to sit for the exam, candidates must register online or by phone with Pearson VUE. They must provide an approved form of ID proof and their PTCB account number. In addition, they must bring an additional photo ID to the test center on exam day. Once the exam is complete, an unofficial score will appear on the screen of the computer.
ExCPT Certification
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam is offered by the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Both organizations are nationally recognized. The biggest difference is which organization is recognized by the state board of pharmacy in your area. The PTCE has been around longer, so it is more established and accepted by many states.
The ExCPT exam is a computer-based test that lasts two hours and includes 100 questions, 20 of which are pretest questions. The questions are divided into three areas: dispensing medications (45%), regulations and technician duties (25%), and drugs and drug therapy (15%). The test-taker is provided with a simple non-programmable calculator during the exam, but may not bring any other materials.
To become a pharmacy technician in Michigan, you must complete an approved pharmacy technician training program or pass the PTCB or ExCPT exam. You must also submit an affidavit from your supervising pharmacist and a background check. In addition, you must submit a notarized application and pay the fee.
ExCPT Verification
The ExCPT verification system maintains current credential information in PTCB’s secure database and performs hourly updates to this information. This database is the primary source for credential verification and is as authentic as a direct inquiry to the Kansas Board of Pharmacy.
The National Healthcareer Association’s ExCPT is a computer-based exam that tests candidates on the dispensing process, regulations and technician duties. It is offered at more than 1,400 Pearson Professional Testing Centers, including online proctoring and on military bases. Candidates have two hours and ten minutes to complete the exam.
To sit for the ExCPT, you must have completed a formal education program or have 1200 hours of supervised work experience. You must also be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED certificate. You may also be required to provide proof of citizenship or a US armed forces ID card.
If you need to cancel or reschedule an ExCPT appointment, you must notify PSI/LaserGrade at least 24 hours in advance to avoid penalties. This notice must come from the candidate; employers or family members cannot cancel an exam appointment on behalf of a candidate.
ExCPT Study Guide
The exam for the certification of pharmacy technicians, commonly referred to as the ExCPT, is required to obtain a job in this profession. The exam is administered by the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians, which is part of the National HealthCareer Association (NHA). To pass the ExCPT exam, you need to complete a training program. The test costs $105, and there are 110 multiple-choice questions that you will have to answer in two hours.

ExCPT Passing Rate

The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) is responsible for the development, administration, and maintenance of the ExCPT. The exam is administered at Pearson VUE testing centers nationwide. The exam consists of 80 scored questions and 10 unscored questions. Each question has four possible answers. The NHA uses a process called item-level scoring to determine the exam pass rate. Each question is assessed by the expert panel in terms of how likely minimally adequate or competent candidates would correctly answer it. Despite the fact that the PTCB has a lower passing rate than ExCPT, it is still important to prepare thoroughly for both exams. Both are extremely challenging and it’s not a good idea to go into either one without doing your homework.

ExCPT California
In California, a high school diploma is required for pharmacy technician licensure. The average cost of a certificate program is $5,200, but financial aid is available to help reduce out-of-pocket costs. Degree programs at public colleges and universities may cost slightly more.
National certification is not required by the State of California to become a pharmacy technician, but it will improve job prospects. Many employers today expect and even pay for their pharmacy technicians to earn PTCB or ExCPT certification.
The PTCE and ExCPT Exams have been evaluated for psychometric soundness by the OPES, and are approved for registration by all boards of pharmacy in the United States. The OPES evaluation found that the PTCE and ExCPT exams assess entry-level pharmacy technician knowledge and skills that are applicable to the practice of pharmacy in retail and hospital pharmacies where most of the nation’s pharmacy technicians find employment. OPES also found that the PTCE and ExCPT provide consistent, reliable, and valid assessment results. Both exams are offered at hundreds of testing centers nationwide.

With almost 283,000 PTCB CPhTs now in active status, PTCB is by far the biggest and most well-known certifying body for pharmacy technicians. It has substantially greater name recognition as a result. Until recently, this exam was specifically needed by all the states that did require techs to pass it.
The NHA’s ExCPT test is the alternative choice for those pursuing certification. The Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) created this exam a few years ago. Only a few states first approved of it. The majority of the United States now recognizes it.
The 100-question ExCPT exam can be taken in person at a PSI testing facility close to you or online with live remote proctoring at a different location. Within two days of scoring your test for online tests, NHA will formally post the results of your certification to your account page.
The PTCE and ExCPT are both accepted by many state regulators. Only three states (WY, ND, and LA) recognize only PTCB and demand certification. Recent approvals of the ExCPT have come from California, Arizona, and Texas.
