Question 1

What is a 'bolter'?

Accepted Answer

An aircraft whose tailhook misses all the wires, so the pilot goes around for another pass

Answer

A bolter occurs when the tailhook fails to engage an arresting wire. The pilot applies full power and flies off the angled deck to make another approach.

Question 2

Which launch system is used on Gerald R. Ford-class carriers in place of steam catapults?

Accepted Answer

EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System)

Answer

EMALS uses linear induction motor technology to accelerate aircraft electromagnetically. Nimitz-class carriers use steam-powered catapults.

Question 3

What is the purpose of the arresting gear on an aircraft carrier?

Accepted Answer

To stop a landing aircraft in a short distance by catching its tailhook

Answer

Arresting gear consists of cross-deck pendant wires connected to energy-absorbing machinery. When the aircraft's tailhook catches a wire, the gear brings the aircraft to a stop within the short landing area.

Question 4

What does the Improved Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System (the 'meatball') provide to the pilot?

Accepted Answer

Glideslope information during the approach

Answer

The optical landing system shows the pilot a light ('the ball') that indicates whether the aircraft is above, below, or on the proper glideslope. It is the primary visual aid during the final approach to the ship.

Question 5

What is the function of the Landing Signal Officer (LSO)?

Accepted Answer

Monitoring and advising pilots during the final approach and landing

Answer

LSOs watch each approach from the LSO platform near the landing area. They give pilots advice and can wave off an unsafe approach.
