What the SCYM is and how it works

According to ASCP Board of Certification, “Most certification examinations are scheduled for 2 hours and 30 minutes and have 100 questions.”^[1]

SCYM is a certification offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC). It is meant for people who work with flow cytometry and want a credential that shows their knowledge of the method, from sample handling to data interpretation.

Eligibility: ASCP sets route-based requirements. They combine a degree with 2-4 years of flow cytometry experience, and you must satisfy at least one route. Routes differ in the degree and experience they accept, so read the SCYM page on the ASCP site before you apply. The application fee is $310.

Delivery: ASCP BOC exams are administered at Pearson testing centers. You must take the exam within the period shown on your Admission Notification, so check that date as soon as you receive it.

Format and scoring: Most ASCP certification exams are scheduled for 2 hours and 30 minutes and have 100 questions. SCYM is listed with 100 multiple-choice questions. Scores are reported on a scale of 100 to 999, and the minimum passing score is 400. You see a preliminary result on screen. Your official score is posted to your ASCP account, and ASCP emails a notification to log in within four business days, provided your documentation is in order.

After you pass: the credential runs on a 3-year cycle, and continuing education must be earned within that cycle.
