The AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) exam is one of the most respected credentials in the welding inspection field — and one of the most demanding certification exams in any skilled trade. Unlike many professional exams that test general knowledge, the CWI exam requires you to navigate actual AWS code documents in real time, apply welding theory under pressure, and demonstrate practical visual inspection competence. That means your study materials matter a lot.

Before selecting study materials, you need to understand what you're preparing for. The AWS CWI exam has three parts, each testing a different dimension of welding inspection knowledge:
Part A: Fundamentals — A 150-question, closed-book exam covering welding processes, metallurgy, weld symbols, NDE methods, and welding quality control. You must answer from memory; no references are permitted. This is where most candidates fail if they haven't done thorough open-book study first — the concepts tested here must be genuinely internalized, not just familiar.
Part B: Practical / Code Book — A 60-question, open-book exam using the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel (or another applicable code, depending on your endorsement). You have the code in hand and must find answers. Speed and navigational skill are critical — you have approximately 2 hours for 60 questions. If you're flipping through the index for every question, you won't finish.
Part C: Practical Examination — A hands-on visual inspection of actual weld samples. You evaluate real welds against acceptance criteria using measuring tools (fillet weld gauges, bridge cam gauges, etc.) and determine accept/reject decisions. You don't need to demonstrate welding ability — only inspection ability.
Each part must be passed with a minimum 72% correct score. Parts A and B can be taken together on the same day; Part C is typically scheduled separately.
The single most important study material for the CWI exam is the code you'll use in Part B. For most candidates, that's AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel. This document is both your open-book reference on exam day and a critical study resource for understanding the standards that underlie Part A as well.
You need to own a current edition of D1.1 before you start preparing seriously. Study an outdated edition and you risk learning superseded acceptance criteria and table values. AWS specifies which edition is accepted on the current exam — check the AWS website for the current approved edition.

Avoid study materials that are more than one AWS code edition old for any code-based content. AWS updates D1.1 on a cycle, and table values, prequalified joint requirements, and inspection criteria do change between editions.
Part C is hands-on, and you need to practice with the right tools before exam day:
If you don't have access to actual weld samples at work, consider purchasing or borrowing a visual inspection coupon set used for training. AWS-approved training centers often have these available. Practicing on real welds — not just photos — develops the tactile and visual skills that translate to Part C performance.

A practical 12–16 week schedule might look like this:

Weeks 5–8: D1.1 navigation and code mastery. Work through the code systematically, section by section. Tab your code as you go. Practice answering code questions without searching — you should be able to open to the right section quickly for the most common question types.
Weeks 9–12: Integrated practice and mock exams. Take full-length practice tests under timed, closed-book conditions for Part A. Time yourself on Part B scenarios with your code open. Practice with inspection tools for Part C.
Weeks 13–16 (if needed): Targeted review and pre-exam prep. Focus on your weakest areas from practice test results. Do final code navigation drills. Confirm your tabbing system is complete. Review the AWS Body of Knowledge one more time to catch any gaps.
Consistency matters more than intensity. Three hours of focused daily study over 16 weeks produces better retention than 12-hour cramming sessions in the final two weeks. The CWI exam rewards deep familiarity, not short-term memorization.
Practice tests are most valuable when you treat every wrong answer as information, not just a score hit. After each practice session, review every question you missed — and every question you guessed correctly but weren't sure about. Ask yourself: why is the correct answer right? Why are the wrong answers wrong? What in D1.1 (or the Body of Knowledge) tells you this?
Don't just practice in your comfort zone. If you're consistently scoring well on welding process questions but low on metallurgy or NDE, spend proportionally more time on your weak areas. The exam tests the full Body of Knowledge, and a strength in one area doesn't compensate for weakness in another when each part has a 72% passing threshold.
