Confidentiality is essential in a parliamentarian's work to protect sensitive information discussed in meetings. RONR prescribes the standard order of business as: Reading and Approval of Minutes; Reports of Officers, Boards, and Committees; Special Orders; Unfinished Business and General Orders; New Business.

The primary purpose of parliamentary procedure is to ensure fairness and order during meetings. It provides a structured framework for conducting business, allowing all members to participate, express their views, and make decisions democratically. A postponed motion resurfaces at the meeting to which it was postponed either as a special order (if so designated) or as a general order under unfinished business and general orders.
