The CLBA (Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment) measures English language proficiency using the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) framework. It is designed for adult immigrants and newcomers to Canada and is used for immigration applications, citizenship purposes, and entry into language training programs across the country.
This free CLBA practice test PDF covers all four skill areas tested in the assessment: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Download it, print it out, and study at your own pace before your official assessment date.
The CLBA measures practical English proficiency at CLB 4 through CLB 8 across four skill areas. Each level reflects real-world communication ability relevant to daily life, work, and civic participation in Canada.
You will be assessed on your ability to understand spoken English in different real-life contexts โ including comprehending instructions, announcements, conversations, and information presentations at CLB 4 through 8 difficulty.
The speaking component evaluates oral communication skills such as giving information, describing personal experiences, participating in discussions, and expressing opinions at CLB 4 through 8 level.
Reading tasks include understanding forms, instructions, notices, informational texts, and workplace documents. Tasks are graded from basic functional reading (CLB 4โ5) through intermediate-level texts (CLB 6โ8).
Writing tasks range from completing forms and writing short notes or messages (CLB 4โ5) to producing short reports and written responses to informational content (CLB 6โ8).
CLB 4โ5 represents a basic functional level of English. CLB 6โ7 is the intermediate level required for many language training programs. CLB 8 and above is required for entry to regulated professions and higher-level training in Canada. Your CLBA profile score is used for Express Entry immigration points and program placement decisions.
