CCM Practice Test

The CCM exam is taken by case managers who apply for certification through The Commission. This page gives you free practice question sets by topic, worked examples that explain every answer option, a study plan, and the exam format, fees, dates and retake rules taken from official Commission documents.

What the CCM is and how it works

According to The Commission, “Of the 180 items on the exam, 150 are operational items and 30 are pretest items. The 30 pretest items are not used in the scoring of the examination.”^[1]

The CCM is a credential for case managers, awarded by The Commission. The certification is valid for 5 years. Eligibility requirements are set by The Commission and are not covered here, so read the current CCM Certification Guide before you apply.

The exam is computer-based through Pearson VUE. You can test at a test center or online with OnVUE remote proctoring. It has 180 multiple-choice questions: 150 are scored and 30 are unscored pretest questions. You get 3 hours of testing inside a 3.5-hour appointment, which also covers seating, the tutorial and the end-of-exam survey.

Scoring is scaled. The passing score is set by the modified-Angoff method, and The Commission does not publish a fixed raw score, because exam forms can differ slightly in difficulty. A preliminary pass or fail appears on screen. Official results arrive about 4–6 weeks after the testing period closes.

Testing periods are April 1–30, August 1–31 and December 1–31. Applications close January 31 for April, May 31 for August and September 30 for December. The total fee is $430 ($235 application plus $195 exam). A retake costs $195. You can retake in the next available exam cycle or reapply, and there is no limit on attempts. Fees and dates can change, so confirm them on The Commission's website.

Explanation:

Option B is right because training gives staff the knowledge to use supplies, equipment and time efficiently, which reduces waste. Increasing the number of staff is wrong because training changes what people know, not how many there are. Reducing the number of staff is wrong for the same reason, and it treats training as a cost-cutting tool. Focusing only on administrative duties is wrong because resource use involves clinical and operational work as well.

Rule to remember: in resource management questions, the answer that builds capability and efficiency usually beats answers about headcount or a single narrow function.

How to use these practice tests

Start by reading the current CCM Certification Guide and Exam Guide from The Commission, so you know the format, the rules and the content outline. Then use our sets to find weak spots rather than to chase a score.

1. Take the general practice test untimed and note which topics feel shaky.
2. Work through those topic sets one at a time, such as ethical and legal issues or clinical assessment and risk management. Read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right.
3. Write down the rule behind each miss in a sentence of your own, then return to the official material to check it.
4. Move to case analysis once the topic sets feel steady, because scenario questions reward judgment more than recall.
5. In the last days before your appointment, retake the general test under timed conditions and review only your notes.
