- Buy a study guide for the SAT AP Chemistry exam to go over the subject.
The AP Chemistry exam requires multiple sorts of calculations, such as percent composition, empirical and molecular formulas, molar masses, gas laws, stoichiometry, mole fractions, Faraday’s law, equilibrium constants, standard electrode potentials, thermodynamic and thermochemical calculations, and kinetics.
Pens with black or dark blue ink are required for filling out spaces on exam booklet covers and for most free-response questions. a calculator is fine if you can use one for your AP exam. A current government-issued or school-issued photo ID is required if you don’t attend the school where the exam is being taken.

- Use scientific language appropriately.
- Utilize resources in your own school.
- Know the exam format before preparing for the exam, it’s good to know what exactly is on it.
- Study throughout the year pacing is essential.
- Do practice questions.
- Know your strengths and weaknesses when Studying.
- Read the questions carefully.
- Use conventional test-taking techniques for the first section of the multiple-choice test.
- As you read the questions, annotate them. Since some questions are lengthy, marking them as you go will enable you to review them and locate the crucial details.
- Multiple electron configuration/hybridization tests will be included in each test. As a result, you should spend enough time working through practice issues so that the subject will come naturally to you.
- Improve your algebraic abilities. One of the most frequent exam blunders, particularly in the free response portion, involves algebra.
- Significant figures and units are vital, so wait to round your responses until the very end. You could lose points if you round before the very last step and provide an incorrect answer.
- Try each step of the puzzle and ensure that your numerical solutions make sense. You can still receive partial credit for other portions of the issue, even if your numbers are incorrect due to an earlier error or ambiguity.
- Review the issues with oxidation and redox and become familiar with them. It is crucial that you are prepared to address these when you see them because they frequently appear on tests (particularly in the free answer section).
- Record the values and units that were supplied to you in writing. Choosing the right formula to employ for a free-response math question might be challenging at times.
- Understand the course syllabus.Familiarize yourself with the topics covered in your course and identify any potential deficiencies in your knowledge beforehand to focus on those areas when studying.
- Set realistic goals. Divide large tasks into smaller ones, and set short-term objectives to help keep yourself motivated as you go through them. This will also help you track your progress toward achieving your ultimate goal of mastering AP Chemistry.
- Use different learning materials. Utilizing various sources such as textbooks, online tutorials, flashcards, and practice tests is essential for getting a deeper understanding of each topic being studied and also acts as an effective way to test what has been learned.
- Space out studying sessions. Breaking down more extensive studies into smaller chunks ensures better absorption rather than doing everything all at once – this could be done by blocking off specific time slots dedicated solely to studying or going over concepts learned previously during class, for example.
- Prepare ahead for upcoming exams/assignments/labs. Reviewing previous notes & notes taken from any lectures attended helps break down complex topics into more manageable sections, which can then be further consolidated using practice questions, diagrams, or even simple experiments if working on lab assignments instead.
- Try looking up solutions from worked examples or past exams where applicable; this will not only reinforce what has already been learned but may even bring up new insights that were initially overlooked before too – making sure there’s enough repetition to stay confident on all subject matter being studied is essential here too.
- Simplify the explanation of the topic.
- Clearly explain the important points.
- Try to convey the principles rather than giving long lectures.
- Use illustrations to clarify the ideas.
- Give pertinent and captivating examples.
- Get creative in delivering your lesson.

AP chemistry is one of the most challenging exams that you can take, but it doesn’t have to be a huge investment of your time. By preparing early and taking advantage of a variety of study tools, you can be prepared for your exam in no time!
The AP chemistry exam is divided into two parts. The first part is a 90-minute multiple-choice section with 60 questions.
This section is split into 3 long-answer questions and 4 short-answer questions, each of which are worth over half the total points earned on this portion of the exam (about 10 points per question).
The second part of the AP chemistry exam is a free-response section that is also divided into 3 long-answer questions and 4 shorter response questions. There is no calculator allowed in the free-response section, so it’s important to understand what the correct answer is.
