What changed for the ABPath exam in 2026
- Fall 2026 Primary Certification (AP and/or CP) application/registration window is February 16 – May 15, 2026 (11:59 PM EST), with the application deadline also May 15, 2026; exam scheduling opens in August/September and exams run October 5 – October 19, 2026 at Pearson VUE test centers. (source)
- Spring 2027 Primary exam window is May 10 – June 4, 2027; Fall 2027 is October 4 – October 18, 2027 — both already posted by ABPath for candidates planning ahead. (source)
- 2026 Primary Certification application fees: Combined AP/CP $2,600; AP only or CP only $2,100 each (each fee includes a nonrefundable $200 administrative fee). ABPath accepts credit card payment only (MasterCard, Visa, American Express) — no checks. (source)
- Cancelling after the application deadline but by the cancellation deadline costs a $500 fee; cancelling after that date forfeits the entire exam fee. (source)
- ABPath certification exams are criterion-referenced tests (CRTs): the passing/cut-off score is fixed in advance by a committee of pathology experts and candidates are measured against that standard, not ranked against each other (ABPath does not use norm-referenced scoring) — there is no single published numeric passing score. (source)
- Current exam formats: the Anatomic Pathology (AP) exam is a one-day computer-based exam with a combined Written/Practical section (205 questions, 3 hrs 25 min) plus a Virtual Microscopy section (90 questions, 4 hrs 30 min) — no glass slides, VM only. The Clinical Pathology (CP) exam is a one-day combined Written/Practical exam of 330 questions (6 hrs 36 min) covering blood banking/transfusion (23%), chemical pathology/immunopathology (20%), hematopathology (25%), medical microbiology (23%) and laboratory management (9%), with molecular pathology questions (10–15%) embedded across all sections. (source)
- Continuing Certification (CC/MOC): diplomates certified after January 1, 2006 are automatically enrolled; participation means completing periodic Reporting forms (license/practice info + CME) and continuously answering ABPath CertLink© (ABPCL) longitudinal-assessment questions through 2-year cycles, tracked via the PATHway portal — one combined CC track covers all of a diplomate’s certifications, with no separate per-certification deadlines. (source)
- Since 2024, primary and subspecialty exam content requires familiarity with both the 2022 International Consensus Classification (ICC) system and the WHO 5th Edition Classification for hematolymphoid neoplasms — still the current standard for the 2026 exam cycle. (source)

American Board of Pathology Pass Rate
The pass rate for the American Board of Pathology 2026 (ABP) exam is a critical metric that reflects the competency and proficiency of future pathologists. With stringent criteria and rigorous testing procedures, achieving a high pass rate on this exam signifies an in-depth understanding of pathology concepts and best practices. However, it's essential to recognize that the pass rate is not just a reflection of individual success but also an indicator of the effectiveness of training programs and resources available to aspiring pathologists.
One interesting aspect to consider is how the pass rate may vary based on different subspecialties within pathology. Some areas may have higher pass rates due to specific study patterns or greater access to resources, while others could present more challenges requiring targeted interventions. By analyzing these variations, we can gain valuable insights into how best to support pathologists-in-training across all specialties and ensure a more balanced distribution of success rates. Overall, understanding the nuances behind the ABP pass rate can lead us towards developing improved strategies for enhancing pathology education and building a stronger community of skilled professionals.
