What the Paramedics Exam is and how it works

According to National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, “Your examination will have between 110–150 questions; 20 of those questions do not affect your score. The unscored questions are for testing new concepts to make sure that future questions are fair and appropriate.”^[1]

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians administers the Paramedic Certification Examination for candidates following an education program, state license, or re-entry pathway. Consult the National Registry’s official Paramedic Certification page for the requirements of your particular pathway; the pathway names alone do not establish your eligibility.

The examination is delivered at Pearson VUE test centers. You have 3.5 hours to answer 110–150 questions. Of those, 20 are unscored questions used to evaluate concepts for future examinations. The examination is scored as a whole on a 100–1500 scale, with a passing point of 950. This is a scaled score, not a percentage of questions answered correctly.

The application fee is $175 per attempt. Your Authorization to Test is valid for up to 90 days from when it posts to your account. If it expires, you must pay the application fee again to obtain a new authorization. Pearson VUE scheduling requires the Candidate ID from your authorization letter; appointments may be made up to 1 business day in advance.

Results generally appear in your National Registry account within 3 business days and are available only there. The retest policy allows 6 attempts, requires a 15-day wait after your last examination, and requires remedial education after 3 failed attempts. Example 1

Question: Which of the following represents the correct interpretation of a QTc interval greater than 500 ms?

1. Normal variant in elderly patients
2. Significantly prolonged, associated with risk of Torsades de Pointes
3. Sign of hyperkalemia
4. Indicates accelerated idioventricular rhythm

C, determining scene safety, addresses whether approaching is safe, so it cannot reasonably be dismissed here. A, determining the mechanism of injury, helps guide assessment but does not replace safety precautions. D, identifying how many patients need treatment, helps determine resource needs but likewise does not replace safety. Remember: assess scene hazards and use appropriate protection before patient contact. Treat this item as ambiguous rather than memorizing its claimed sequence.
