ASVAB Questions and Answers

What is the ASVAB test?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude test administered by the U.S. military to assess a candidate's qualifications for enlistment and to determine which military occupational specialties (MOS) they are eligible for. It is used by all five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

How many subtests are on the ASVAB and how long is the test?

The ASVAB consists of 10 subtests: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto & Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, Assembling Objects, and Verbal Expression. The computer-adaptive version (CAT-ASVAB) takes about 1.5 hours; the paper version takes about 3 hours.

What ASVAB score is needed to join the military?

Each branch has a minimum Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score requirement: Army (31), Navy (35), Marines (32), Air Force (36), and Coast Guard (40). The AFQT score is derived from four subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Word Knowledge.

How is the ASVAB scored?

The ASVAB produces two types of scores: the AFQT score (a percentile score from 1-99 comparing you to a national sample) and composite or line scores that determine job eligibility within each branch. A higher AFQT percentile means you scored better than that percentage of the reference group.

How many times can you retake the ASVAB?

You must wait one calendar month after your first ASVAB attempt to retake it. A second retake requires another month's wait. After the second retake, you must wait six months between each subsequent attempt. Your most recent valid score is used for enlistment decisions.

What is the best strategy for studying for the ASVAB?

Focus the most study time on the four AFQT subtests โ€” Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension โ€” since these determine your overall eligibility score. Use full-length practice tests to simulate timing, review weak areas with subtest-specific drills, and study vocabulary extensively to boost Word Knowledge scores.
