What the CMRT is and how it works
According to Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals Certifying Organization, “There are no specific educational or experience prerequisites”[4]
The CMRT exam checks the hands-on knowledge a maintenance and reliability technician uses every day: corrective work, routine maintenance practices, preventive and predictive tasks, and troubleshooting. SMRPCO runs the certification, and its candidate handbook is the official reference for anything below.
Delivery and format. The exam is taken on a computer at Pearson VUE facilities. It contains 175 multiple-choice questions, and you have 3 hours to finish. Results are available immediately after you submit the exam. The passing standard is not listed here, so check the candidate handbook for how scores are reported.
Eligibility and fees. There are no specific education or experience prerequisites. The fee depends on who you are: USD 250 for SMRP members, USD 300 for nonmembers, and USD 195 for employees of a Sustaining Sponsor or U.S. veterans. Applications stay open, with no fixed deadline. After you buy the exam you have six months to schedule and sit for it.
Retakes. If you do not pass, you must wait six months since your last attempt, then reapply and pay the exam fee again as a new candidate.
Keeping the credential. Certification is valid for three years. To recertify, you need 50 course hours drawn from at least two activity categories during each cycle. The recertification guide on smrp.org lists which activities count.
CMRT content outline and where to practise each area
The content areas below are copied from the official CMRT content outline published by Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals Certifying Organization. The right-hand column shows which of our practice sets covers it.
| Official content area | Practice on this site |
|---|---|
| Corrective Maintenance[3] | CMRT - Certified Maintenance and Reliabili... Practise the steps after a breakdown: safe isolation, repair, testing before handover, recording the failure, and deciding when a root cause analysis is needed. |
| Maintenance Practices[3] | CMRT Maintenance Practices Work on safe work practices, lockout, PPE, lubrication, fastening, alignment and the correct use of tools and work orders. |
| Preventative and Predictive Maintenance[3] | CMRT Preventive and Predictive Maintenance Practise choosing between time-based and condition-based tasks and reading results from vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis and ultrasound. |
| Troubleshooting and Analysis[3] | CMRT Troubleshooting and Analysis Practise moving step by step from symptom to cause, using test data, failure patterns and root cause methods instead of guessing at parts. |

Worked examples: how to reason through CMRT questions
These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.
Example 1
Question: After completing a corrective maintenance task on a recurring equipment failure, what is the most important follow-up activity to prevent future occurrences?
- Performing a Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Notifying the production supervisor that the equipment is running.
- Increasing the frequency of all preventive maintenance tasks for that asset.
- Closing the work order in the CMMS immediately.
Answer: A. Performing a Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
Explanation:
A is correct. When a failure keeps coming back, the repair only treats the symptom. A root cause analysis finds why the part failed, such as misalignment, poor lubrication or an operating error, so a lasting fix can be made.
- B is good communication, but telling production the line is running does nothing to stop the next failure.
- C is a blanket reaction. More preventive tasks cost labour, may not touch the real cause, and extra intrusive work can bring in new faults.
- D closes the work order too early. The failure details and cause codes should be recorded first, because that history is what the analysis needs.
Rule to remember: for a repeat failure, find and fix the root cause before changing the maintenance strategy.
Example 2
Question: Which FFT window function is best suited for detecting closely spaced frequency components with similar amplitudes?
- Hanning
- Flat Top
- Rectangular
- Exponential
Answer: A. Hanning
Explanation:
A is correct. The Hanning window tapers each end of the time record to zero, which cuts spectral leakage while keeping a fairly narrow main lobe. That balance lets two peaks of similar height that sit close together show up as separate lines, which is why Hanning is the usual default for machinery vibration.
- B, Flat Top, gives the most accurate amplitude, but its wide main lobe smears neighbouring peaks into one.
- C, Rectangular, applies no taper. On continuous signals it leaks energy into nearby bins and can hide close peaks. It suits transients that fit fully inside the record.
- D, Exponential, is for impact or ring-down tests such as bump tests, not steady running signals.
Rule to remember: use Hanning for resolution, Flat Top for amplitude, and Rectangular or Exponential for transients.
Example 3
Question: What is the correct sequence for donning and doffing PPE to minimize self-contamination when working with hazardous chemicals?
- Don outer gloves last; doff inner gloves last
- Don from most contaminated layer inward; doff from least contaminated layer outward
- Don from innermost to outermost layers; doff from outermost to innermost layers
- The sequence does not matter as long as all PPE is worn and removed in a clean area
Answer: C. Don from innermost to outermost layers; doff from outermost to innermost layers
Explanation:
C is correct. You put PPE on from the inside out: base clothing first, then suit, boots and respirator, with gloves last. You take it off in reverse, outer layers first, because the outer layers carry the most contamination. Removing them first keeps contaminated surfaces away from your skin and clean clothing.
- A gets the gloves partly right but gives no rule for the other layers, so it is not the full sequence.
- B reverses the logic. Starting from the most contaminated layer makes no sense when donning, and doffing from least contaminated outward spreads contamination.
- D is wrong because order matters. Removing items in the wrong sequence transfers chemicals even in a clean area.
Rule to remember: on inside to outside, off outside to inside, inner gloves last, then wash your hands.
How to use these practice tests
Start with the official outline. Download the SMRPCO candidate handbook and read the four content areas. Note which ones match your daily work and which feel unfamiliar.
Take one set per area as a baseline. Work through the Corrective Maintenance, Maintenance Practices, Preventive and Predictive Maintenance, and Troubleshooting and Analysis sets above without notes. Mark every question you got wrong or guessed.
Study the gaps, not the strengths. For each missed question, read the explanation and write the general rule in one line, as in the worked examples above. Then use the narrower sets, such as Lubrication and Tribology, Mechanical Systems and Alignment, Equipment Reliability and Maintenance Planning and Scheduling, to go deeper on weak topics.
Link questions to the job. When a question covers vibration, lockout or root cause analysis, think of a real job where you saw it. That makes the rule easier to recall under time pressure.
Rehearse the real conditions. Before test day, answer a long mixed run of questions in one sitting so you get used to 175 questions in 3 hours. Book your Pearson VUE seat early enough to stay inside the six-month window after purchase.
