Students can choose between research-oriented or course based programs. Research-based programs require students to write a thesis that contributes to their field of study. Course based programs do not require students to write a thesis.
The program lasts one academic year and requires a full-time commitment. Admission to the program is based on law school academic achievement, work experience, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. International students must register for LSAC’s Document Assembly Service.
All LLM students must take at least 24 credits of coursework. Students may satisfy a portion of the requirement by taking non-law courses, but must have these courses approved in advance by the Assistant Dean for Graduate & International Studies. Students who intend to sit for the New York Bar must also take a course that meets the Advanced Legal Writing (ALW) requirement.

The law is many things, but it’s not one of them is simplicity. The bulk of people must rely on attorneys to successfully comprehend, interpret, and unravel the law. Most employment, unless you’re an attorney in practice, doesn’t require extensive legal knowledge outside the narrow areas pertinent to your lines of business, such as worker safety laws or plagiarism. However, if you don’t have a solid understanding of the law, it may be difficult for you to execute your job well and advance in your career in many fields where daily tasks frequently conflict with state and federal regulations.
