The Certified Journalism Educator credential recognizes qualified educators through the Journalism Education Association. To be eligible, an applicant must be a current JEA member. The exam is administered online under the supervision of a proctor, with testing available virtually or on-site at conventions, including on-site testing on November 20, 2026 in Orlando, FL. Registration fees are $60 for on-site testing and $85 for virtual testing. Applications must be received by March 15 for spring testing, June 15 for summer testing, or Oct. 15 for fall testing.

The test is worth 100 points and consists of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions. To pass, candidates must achieve a score of 75% or higher overall, including at least 75% on the law and ethics section, within 1 year of application. Score results are released within 6–8 weeks after taking the exam. If an applicant does not pass on the initial attempt, JEA permits one free retake within 1 year of the application date, and the law and ethics section may be retaken alone. The credential is valid for 5 years, expiring Dec. 31 at the end of the term, and requires renewal every 5 years with a $10 fee and evidence of three professional growth activities.
