What Is the AMCAT Test?

The AMCAT (Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test) is a standardized online assessment that measures the employability skills of fresh graduates and entry-level job seekers. It was developed to solve a specific problem in the Indian job market: companies could not reliably compare candidates from different colleges because each institution had its own grading system.

AMCAT provides a common benchmark. A student from a tier-3 engineering college can score the same as a student from a tier-1 college — and that score is what companies use for shortlisting. This makes the amcat exam particularly valuable for students who are not from colleges where top employers recruit directly on campus.

The test covers three core areas — English, Logical Ability, and Quantitative Ability — plus optional domain modules (Computer Programming, Electronics, Sales, etc.) that candidates take based on the type of role they are applying for. Who Makes the AMCAT Test?

The AMCAT was developed by Aspiring Minds, an Indian assessments company founded in 2008 by Himanshu Aggarwal and Varun Aggarwal. Aspiring Minds built the test specifically for the Indian entry-level hiring market, where millions of engineering graduates compete for jobs at IT services companies, BPOs, and startups each year.

In 2019, Aspiring Minds was acquired by SHL (a global talent measurement company owned by CEB/Gartner, then Exponent Private Equity). SHL is one of the world's largest providers of psychometric and cognitive assessments, used by Fortune 500 companies globally. After the acquisition, the AMCAT continued operating under the Aspiring Minds brand while gaining access to SHL's global research and validation infrastructure.

The test is now administered through the myamcat.com platform, which also functions as a job board — companies post score cutoffs, and candidates who meet those cutoffs can apply or be approached directly by recruiters. What Does AMCAT Measure?

The AMCAT assesses three types of abilities:

1. Core Cognitive Aptitude (Mandatory)

• English Comprehension: Reading comprehension of business and technical passages, grammar rules, vocabulary in context, and sentence correction. Tests the ability to understand written English at a professional level.
• Logical Ability: Deductive and inductive reasoning — number series, letter patterns, logical sequences, statement-conclusion, and data sufficiency problems. Tests the ability to think systematically.
• Quantitative Ability: Mathematics at the Indian class 10–12 level — percentages, ratios, profit and loss, time-speed-distance, simple and compound interest, data interpretation from tables and charts, and basic statistics.

2. Domain Knowledge (Optional, role-specific)

• Computer Programming Fundamentals (for software roles)
• Computer Science (for CS/IT graduates)
• Electronics and Semiconductor (for ECE graduates)
• Sales and Marketing Aptitude
• SVAR (Spoken English and Voice) — for BPO/customer service roles

3. Personality and Behavioral

• Behavioral questionnaire assessing work style, team orientation, and professional traits — not scored pass/fail, but shared with employers as context for interviews.

AMCAT Scores Explained

Each AMCAT module produces two numbers: a raw score (0–900) and a percentile rank. The percentile rank is what companies actually use — it tells them what percentage of all AMCAT test-takers you outperformed in that module.

Score interpretation guidelines:

• 750+ (90th+ percentile): Excellent — top performer in that module
• 650–749 (75th–89th percentile): Strong — competitive for most major IT and services companies
• 500–649 (50th–74th percentile): Competitive — meets cutoffs for mid-sized companies
• Below 500: Below median — most companies' cutoffs will not be met

Your complete score report is shareable via the myamcat.com platform. Companies search the platform for candidates matching their score requirements. Keeping your score above the 70th percentile in all three mandatory modules significantly increases the number of companies that can discover your profile.
