The video above walks through Virginia Bar Exam-style questions. The Virginia Board of Bar Examiners (VBBE) currently administers a two-part exam: the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), created by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), plus a Virginia-specific essay exam. Virginia does not currently use the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) — that changes in July 2028, when the Board will adopt the NCBE's NextGen UBE (a 9-hour exam over 1.5 days combining multiple-choice, short-answer, and constructed-response questions). The NCBE will discontinue the current MBE format after the February 2028 administration.
To pass in Virginia, applicants need a combined weighted MBE + Virginia Essay scaled score of 140 (an MBE scaled score of 133+ can be transferred in from another jurisdiction if taken within 3 years). Virginia also requires an MPRE scaled score of 85 or higher, which can be earned any time before the bar exam or before a passing bar score expires — passing bar scores are valid for 5 years.
