What the SAF is and how it works

According to Society of American Foresters, “For the CF credential, each applicant must have five-years or more of qualifying professional experience”[1]

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) gives the Certified Forester credential to forestry professionals who meet its standards for education, experience and knowledge. To apply, you need 5 or more years of qualifying professional experience plus qualifying education. SAF reviews each application, so read the exact rules on the SAF Certification Requirements page before you apply.

You can apply at any time. There is no fixed testing window. The application fee is $280 for SAF members and $400 for non-members. Once you are approved, you book the exam through SMT. You can take it at a test site, or take it remote proctored from your home or office.

Results are given as a scaled score from 0 to 100, and a passing scaled score is 75. A scaled score may not match the percentage of questions you got right, so in practice aim well above the line rather than for exactly 75 percent. There is currently no limit on how many times you can take the exam. However, you have one year to pass after your application is approved.

The credential lasts 3 years. To renew it, each Certified Forester must complete 45 CFE credit hours within that three-year period. SAF can change any of these rules, so the official Certification FAQ and Requirements pages have the final word.

Worked examples: how to reason through SAF questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: What is the importance of continuing education for SAF professionals in Soil Science & Analysis?

  1. Maintaining current knowledge and adapting to industry changes
  2. Filling time between engagements
  3. Justifying higher fees
  4. Only for new professionals

Answer: A. Maintaining current knowledge and adapting to industry changes

Explanation:

A is correct. Certification is not something you finish once and forget. Soil science, like the rest of forestry, changes as research, tools and regulations change. Continuing education is how a certified professional keeps up, and it also counts toward the credential's renewal requirements.

  • B is wrong because continuing education is planned professional development, not a way to fill gaps between jobs.
  • C is wrong because the goal is competence, not a reason to charge clients more.
  • D is wrong because learning lasts a whole career. Experienced professionals meet new methods and rules just as newcomers do.

Rule to remember: if a question asks why continuing education matters, choose the answer about staying current and meeting certification requirements. Reject answers about money, convenience or career stage.

Example 2

Question: What is the main focus of forest ecology?

  1. Timber pricing
  2. Interactions within forest ecosystems
  3. Road construction
  4. Carbon trading

Answer: B. Interactions within forest ecosystems

Explanation:

B is correct. Forest ecology studies the interactions inside forest ecosystems. It looks at how trees, other plants, animals, fungi and microbes affect each other, and how they respond to soil, climate, water and light. This explains how forests are built, how they work and how they change over time.

  • A is wrong because timber pricing belongs to forest economics.
  • C is wrong because road building is forest engineering and operations. Ecology may help decide where a road goes, but road building is not what ecology studies.
  • D is wrong because carbon trading is a market and policy tool. Ecology can measure how much carbon a forest stores, but trading that carbon is economics.

Rule to remember: ecology answers are about how living things relate to each other and their environment. Answers about prices, markets or construction belong to other fields.

Example 3

Question: What is the role of biodiversity in forest ecosystems?

  1. It decreases ecosystem function
  2. It contributes to ecosystem resilience and productivity
  3. It increases logging costs
  4. It harms wildlife habitats

Answer: B. It contributes to ecosystem resilience and productivity

Explanation:

B is correct. Biodiversity is the variety of species, genes and habitats in a forest, and it makes the ecosystem more resilient. When a pest, disease, fire or drought hits some species, others keep key processes going, such as nutrient cycling, pollination and regrowth. A varied community also uses resources more fully, which supports productivity.

  • A is wrong because it gets the relationship backwards. Losing diversity is what tends to weaken how an ecosystem works.
  • C is wrong because logging costs are a business question, not the ecological role of biodiversity.
  • D is wrong because diverse forests usually offer wildlife more kinds of habitat, not fewer.

Rule to remember: on biodiversity questions, the right answer links variety to stability, resilience and productivity. Options that call diversity harmful usually get the science backwards.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official material. Read the SAF Certification Requirements page and FAQ, confirm you are eligible, and look for the current content outline SAF publishes for the exam. Our practice sets are grouped by topic and are not a copy of the official exam outline.

Do a first pass without notes. Work through the core sets, such as Forest Ecology & Silviculture, Forest Resource Management & Planning, Measurement, Analysis & Decision Support Systems and Policy, Economics & Administration. Note which topics you miss most. Read the explanation for every wrong answer and write down the rule behind it, not just the letter.

Put most of your time into weak areas. Use textbooks, field manuals and your own work experience to fill the gaps. Sets such as Regulatory Framework & Compliance, Water Quality & Management and Soil Science & Analysis reward understanding the reasoning, not just knowing the terms.

Before test day, retake your lowest-scoring sets until your results are steadily well above the passing scaled score of 75. If you plan to test remote proctored, check SMT's equipment and room rules early. You have one year from approval to pass, so leave time for a retake if you need one.
