Worked examples: how to reason through SELT questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: By the time the firefighters arrived at the scene, the building ______ to the ground.

1. has already burned
2. was already burning
3. had already burned
4. already burned

Answer: C. had already burned

Explanation:

The correct answer is had already burned. The sentence describes an earlier event (the building burning) and a later event (the firefighters arriving). When you need to show that something was finished before another past moment, English uses the past perfect.

"Has already burned" is present perfect and does not fit a sentence set in the past. "Was already burning" is past continuous, which says the fire was in progress when they arrived, not that the building had already gone. "Already burned" is simple past and does not show which event came first, so the sequence is unclear.

Rule to remember: when a sentence has "by the time" plus a past event, the earlier action usually takes had plus the past participle.

Example 2

Question: In a formal academic essay, which paragraph structure is most effective?

1. Evidence first, then the topic sentence, then the analysis.
2. Topic sentence, supporting evidence, analysis, and a link to the thesis.
3. Analysis first, then evidence, then the topic sentence.
4. A question, followed by an opinion, then a story.

Answer: B. Topic sentence, supporting evidence, analysis, and a link to the thesis.

Explanation:

The correct answer is topic sentence, supporting evidence, analysis, and a link to the thesis. This order tells the reader the point, proves it, explains why the proof matters, and then connects it back to the main argument.

Putting evidence before the topic sentence leaves the reader unsure what the evidence is for. Starting with analysis means explaining something that has not been shown yet. Opening with a question, then an opinion, then a story is chatty and loosely organised, which does not suit formal academic writing.

Rule to remember: in formal writing each paragraph makes a claim, supports it, explains it and links back to the thesis, so the reader always knows where the argument is going.

Example 3

Question: When structuring the conclusion of a formal report, which of the following elements is essential?

1. Introducing new evidence to surprise the reader.
2. A personal anecdote that is loosely related to the topic.
3. Using informal language and slang to connect with the reader.
4. A summary of the main points and a concluding statement.

Answer: D. A summary of the main points and a concluding statement.

Explanation:

The correct answer is a summary of the main points and a concluding statement. A conclusion reminds the reader of what the report found and closes with a clear final position, which gives a sense of completion.

New evidence in a conclusion is wrong because the reader has no chance to see it tested in the body. A loosely related personal anecdote distracts from the findings and does not belong in a formal report. Informal language and slang clash with the expected tone of formal writing.

Rule to remember: a formal conclusion restates, does not add. Pull together what is already there, keep the register formal, and finish with a clear closing statement.

How to use these practice tests

Start by reading the official Skills for English test page and the test-taker information for the level you need, so you know which components you will sit and how long each lasts. Note the time limits and compare them with your own pace.

Then work through the practice sets by skill. For reading, use SELT Reading and Reading for the Main Idea, followed by Understanding Vocabulary in Context. For writing, try Structuring Formal Writing, Using Connectives and Linking Words and Correct Verb Tense Usage.

For speaking and listening, use Listening for Specific Details, Following Spoken Directions, Expressing Opinions Clearly and Participating in a Discussion.

After each set, read every explanation, including those for questions you got right, and write down the rule behind each mistake. Because you must pass every component, give extra time to your weakest skill instead of repeating the one you like. Practise speaking aloud and writing under a timer. These sets are written by us and are not real exam questions, so use them for skills and not for predicting what appears.

Focus on the specific skills required for your visa. For citizenship, only Speaking and Listening (2-skills) are usually required. For Skilled Worker visas, you typically need Reading and Writing as well (4-skills).

SELT Score Interpretation

Understanding your SELT scores in relation to CEFR levels and visa requirements is crucial for your application.

To pass the SELT exam, you must meet the specific CEFR level requirement for your visa category. There is no single "pass mark" for all; you must perform at the required level (e.g., B1) across all assessed skills.

Budget between £150 and £250 for your SELT exam, including the test fee and basic preparation materials. Retakes require full payment, so preparation is key.

Your SELT result must be valid on the day you submit your visa application. If your certificate is older than 2 years, you must retake the exam. *Results can sometimes be reused for subsequent applications if the level is sufficient.
