RRB NTPC Practice Test

RRB NTPC is the Railway Recruitment Boards' recruitment exam for graduate and undergraduate non-technical posts, taken as a Computer Based Test. This page gives candidates free practice sets on mathematics, reasoning, general awareness, science and Indian Railways, plus worked questions, a study plan and answers to common questions.

What the RRB NTPC is and how it works

According to Railway Recruitment Boards, Ministry of Railways, Government of India, “The 1st Stage CBT will be of 90 minutes duration for 100 questions (40 General Awareness, 30 Mathematics, and 30 General Intelligence and Reasoning).”^[1]

RRB NTPC is run by the Railway Recruitment Boards, Ministry of Railways, Government of India. The recruitment process includes a 1st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT), a 2nd Stage CBT, a Computer Based Aptitude Test or Typing Skill Test where it applies to the post, and Document Verification and Medical Examination. All tests are taken on a computer at designated test centers.

Format. CBT 1 has 100 questions in 90 minutes: 40 General Awareness, 30 Mathematics and 30 General Intelligence and Reasoning. CBT 2 has 120 questions in 90 minutes: 50 General Awareness, 35 Mathematics and 35 General Intelligence and Reasoning. Eligible PwBD candidates with a scribe get 120 minutes.

Minimum marks. The qualifying percentages are 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC (non creamy layer) and SC, and 25% for ST.

Eligibility. For the Graduate notice (CEN 06/2026), you need a degree from a recognized university or equivalent, and an age of 18 to 33 years. The Undergraduate notice is CEN 07/2026.

Fees. General and OBC candidates pay ₹500, and ₹400 is refunded after appearing in CBT 1. SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minority and EBC candidates pay ₹250, refunded after appearing in CBT 1, less bank charges.

Deadlines. Applications for CEN 06/2026 close on November 6, 2026. Applications for CEN 07/2026 close on November 13, 2026. Age relaxations, post lists and retake rules are not covered here, so check the official notice at rrb.indianrailways.gov.in before you apply.

Worked examples: how to reason through RRB NTPC questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: Which element has the atomic number 1?

1. Helium
2. Oxygen
3. Hydrogen
4. Carbon

Answer: C. Hydrogen

Explanation:

Hydrogen is correct because its atoms have a single proton, and the atomic number is the count of protons in the nucleus. That makes it the lightest element and the first entry in the periodic table.

Helium is wrong because it has more protons than hydrogen, so its atomic number is higher. Oxygen is wrong for the same reason: it sits much further along the table. Carbon is also wrong, as it has more protons than any of the other options listed except oxygen.

Rule to remember: atomic number equals the number of protons. Learn the first few elements in order, since quick recall questions on them are common in general science.

Example 2

Question: Which Article of the Indian Constitution deals with the Right to Equality?

1. Article 12-18
2. Article 19-22
3. Article 23-24
4. Article 25-28

Answer: A. Article 12-18

Explanation:

The correct option is the range of articles that covers the Right to Equality, which is part of the Fundamental Rights. Be aware that the range opens with general definitions for the fundamental rights part, so the equality provisions themselves start a little after the first article of that range.

The range 19-22 is wrong because it covers the Right to Freedom. The range 23-24 is wrong because it deals with the Right against Exploitation. The range 25-28 is wrong because it covers the Right to Freedom of Religion.

Rule to remember: learn the Fundamental Rights as a sequence of groups, equality first, then freedom, exploitation and religion. Matching each right to its article group answers most questions of this type.

Example 3

Question: The Chief Election Commissioner of India may be removed from office by

1. President of India
2. Both houses of Parliament
3. India's Chief Justice
4. Union council of Ministers

Answer: B. Both houses of Parliament

Explanation:

Both Houses of Parliament is correct. The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed only in the way a Supreme Court judge is removed: both Houses must pass a resolution by a special majority. This protects the independence of the Election Commission.

President of India is wrong because the President appoints the Commissioner but cannot remove one alone. India's Chief Justice is wrong because the judiciary has no power of removal here. Union council of Ministers is wrong because allowing the government of the day to dismiss the Commissioner would defeat the purpose of the safeguard.

Rule to remember: for independent constitutional posts, ask who appoints and who removes. Removal is deliberately harder than appointment, and often needs Parliament.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official notice for your post at rrb.indianrailways.gov.in. Note your eligibility, the CBT format and the minimum marks for your category, so you know what you are aiming at.

Next, take the Start Practice Test set as a baseline and write down which topics cost you marks. Mathematics and reasoning reward steady practice, so work on Arithmetic and Number Systems, Algebra and Geometry and General Intelligence and Reasoning regularly.

General Awareness carries the most questions in both CBTs, so give it daily time. Rotate through General Science, History and Polity of India, Geography and Environment, Indian Railways and Current Affairs and Static GK.

After every set, read the explanation for each wrong answer and note the rule behind it. In the final days, practise against the clock at the CBT length of 90 minutes, and revisit only your noted weak points.
