Reading tasks span content areas including science, social studies, language arts, and mathematics. Text types are appropriate to each grade band, and comprehension questions assess a student's ability to navigate informational and literary texts in English.
Written tasks range from single sentences at early levels to multi-paragraph responses at higher levels. Students are assessed on academic vocabulary, grammar, mechanics, and organization in written English.
OELPA scores are reported on the WIDA proficiency scale from 1.0 to 6.0. Level 1 (Entering) represents minimal English proficiency, while Level 6 (Reaching) reflects near-native academic language use. Ohio students typically must reach a composite score of 4.8 or above to be considered for reclassification as English Proficient and exit EL services.
