What the OELPA Tests: Four Language Domains
The OELPA evaluates English language proficiency across four distinct domains. Each domain targets academic language use appropriate to the student's grade band and proficiency level.
Listening
Students demonstrate understanding of spoken English in academic and social contexts. Items include oral instructions, classroom discussions, and short presentations. Tasks grow in complexity from simple sentences at lower levels to extended multi-speaker conversations at higher levels.
Speaking
Students produce oral language in response to prompts — describing images, explaining processes, or discussing content-area topics. Responses are evaluated on academic vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and fluency at each proficiency level.
Reading
Reading tasks span content areas including science, social studies, language arts, and mathematics. Text types are appropriate to each grade band, and comprehension questions assess a student's ability to navigate informational and literary texts in English.
Writing
Written tasks range from single sentences at early levels to multi-paragraph responses at higher levels. Students are assessed on academic vocabulary, grammar, mechanics, and organization in written English.
WIDA Proficiency Levels Explained
OELPA scores are reported on the WIDA proficiency scale from 1.0 to 6.0. Level 1 (Entering) represents minimal English proficiency, while Level 6 (Reaching) reflects near-native academic language use. Ohio students typically must reach a composite score of 4.8 or above to be considered for reclassification as English Proficient and exit EL services.
