Master of Science in Chemistry

It interfaces with many other subjects, including biology, physics and mathematics. It’s a challenging but rewarding subject to study, and one that can lead to many different career paths.

The MChem offers the opportunity to specialize in particular areas of chemistry, and is suited to students who want to go on to further research or industry. It builds on the three-year BSc, but has a deeper focus across key topics and includes a year in a research group. This is an excellent way to develop your research skills and may even lead to publishable work.

The course combines lectures and small-group tutorials, with practical classes. A ‘flipped’ teaching approach allows you to watch videos of lectures before attending classroom sessions, and pre-lab simulations allow you to practice practical techniques before the actual session. Independent study is also a significant part of the programme, allowing you to follow up on lecture material and develop your analytical thinking.

Master of Chemistry Salary

A master’s in chemistry is the first step to a career in the science of matter and its interaction with other materials. It teaches advanced laboratory techniques and provides students with the tools to research and develop new substances. Students can find jobs in a variety of fields, including medical research, manufacturing, and environmental analysis.

Salary for chemists can vary widely depending on the type of job and location. According to the ACS, salaries for chemists in industry and government rose by 2.5% over the past decade, while those with Ph.D. saw a smaller increase. The size of the employer also plays a role in salary, with workers in large firms earning about one-third more than those in small firms.

MChem students take part in a year-long industrial placement, or undertake a Knowledge and Research Exchange at a European university, as part of their degree. This allows them to gain valuable experience and work alongside full-time researchers in a professional environment. They can also try to secure work experience on a voluntary basis, or through short-term industrial projects.

Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry

Whether you’re tackling climate change, developing new pharmaceuticals or creating new materials, chemistry is vital to the world we live in. You’ll develop practical and theoretical skills across all areas of the subject, building your understanding of chemical behavior through designing and testing hypotheses. You’ll also gain an in-depth knowledge of the major topics at the cutting edge of research in chemistry. Master of Science in Industrial Chemistry

Chemistry is at the heart of the modern world, helping to create and maintain everything that we eat, wear and use. This integrated master’s degree will help you to explore the major scientific challenges that will affect our future: developing renewable energy sources, cleaner manufacturing processes and medicines for disease.

You will learn a range of core and advanced chemistry disciplines, with the option to specialize in a particular area of science. Master of Science in Organic Chemistry

Our MChem course has been developed to offer you advanced topics at the cutting-edge of chemistry research, as well as the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of research with an academic group.

During your first year, you will learn the fundamentals of inorganic, physical and organic chemistry through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars and discussion groups, supported by practical classes. You will also take modules in mathematics, physics and biology to ensure you have the necessary skills for further study.

In your second and third years, you will build on your knowledge and explore a range of more advanced topics. You will be introduced to the chemistry of the elements, the chemistry of nanoscience, cage and cluster chemistry, and advanced organic synthesis, along with the chemical behavior of polymers and molecular catalysis. You will have the option to take a year-long industrial placement in your fourth year, enabling you to work on real-world chemistry challenges with industry partners.

Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Chemistry is central to many of the world’s most important challenges, from tackling global health and medicine, to energy production and sustainable food. It is a key discipline that interfaces with biology, physics and geology, and its discoveries enable the creation of new materials and products. This degree is a research-led programme with an emphasis on solving real-world problems, and will equip you with the analytical and practical skills to progress your career in this exciting field.

You will gain a strong grounding in core chemistry, with the option to specialize in specialist areas such as polymers or organic synthesis in years three and four. In your final year you will take part in a research-based placement or complete an extended research project.

MChem Oxford

Our four-year MChem degrees and five-year MChem with a year in industry provide you with an enhanced level of knowledge of core areas of chemistry, supplemented by advanced research-focused topics. You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and workshops, as well as hands-on laboratory classes.
