The argument commits the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy by attributing score improvement solely to the textbook without considering other factors.
2. A cone: radius 5cm, height 12cm. Filled to half height. What fraction of total volume is filled?
At half height, radius is halved. Volume scales as cube of linear dimension: (1/2)^3 = 1/8.
3. A water tank holds 3,000 liters. A pump fills it at a rate of 25 liters per minute. How many hours will it take to fill the tank?
Time = 3000 ÷ 25 = 120 minutes = 2 hours.
4. Athlete runs 100m in 10.5s. At this pace, how long for a mile (1609m)?
Speed = 9.524 m/s. Time = 1609/9.524 = 168.9 seconds.
5. A university administrator argues: 'Since our graduates earn 30% more than the national average, attending our university is a worthwhile investment.' What is the most critical unstated assumption?
The argument assumes a causal relationship between attending the university and higher earnings, but the higher salaries could simply reflect that the university admits students who were already high-achievers likely to earn more regardless of where they studied. Without ruling out this selection bias, the conclusion does not follow.
6. 'Raising the legal driving age to 18 will reduce traffic accidents because younger drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in crashes.' What assumption is required?
If the real factor is inexperience rather than age, 18-year-old new drivers would face the same elevated risk.
