ISAT International Student Admissions Test Practice Test PDF

The ISAT (International Student Admissions Test) is developed and administered by ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) and is used by Australian universities — including the University of Melbourne and Monash University — as part of the admissions process for international students applying to competitive undergraduate programs such as medicine, law, and engineering. The test does not assess curriculum knowledge; instead, it measures general reasoning ability through two timed sections: Critical Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.

Our free ISAT practice test PDF lets you study offline and practice both reasoning sections at your own pace. Familiarity with question types and time pressure is the single most effective preparation strategy for the ISAT.

What the ISAT Tests

Critical Reasoning Section

The Critical Reasoning section presents 40 questions in 40 minutes, requiring approximately one minute per question. Each question is based on a short passage of academic or general text. Question types include reading comprehension, argument evaluation, identifying assumptions and conclusions, logical inference, and cause-and-effect reasoning. A key rule for this section is that all answers must come from the passage itself — bringing in outside knowledge or personal opinions is a common mistake that leads to wrong answers. Practice reading academic text quickly, identifying the main argument, and evaluating whether a conclusion logically follows from the evidence given.

Quantitative Reasoning Section

The Quantitative Reasoning section also has 40 questions in 40 minutes. Questions test arithmetic (percentages, ratios, rates of change), algebra (solving equations and inequalities), statistics (mean, median, mode, reading data from graphs), data interpretation (tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts), and geometry (area, perimeter, angles). The math level is equivalent to upper secondary school — no calculus is required. The challenge is speed: multi-step problems must be solved accurately in under 60 seconds on average. Efficient estimation, working backwards from answer choices, and eliminating clearly wrong options are critical time-saving techniques.

How Australian Universities Use the ISAT

The ISAT is used as one component of a holistic admissions review alongside academic transcripts, English proficiency test scores (IELTS or TOEFL), and in some programs, personal statements or interviews. A higher ISAT score strengthens an application to competitive programs where many international students have similar academic transcripts. The University of Melbourne publishes indicative ISAT score ranges for its programs, giving applicants a benchmark to target during preparation.

  • Download official ACER ISAT preparation materials and complete at least one full timed practice test
  • Practice the Critical Reasoning section under strict 1-minute-per-question conditions
  • Train yourself to answer only from the passage — never use outside knowledge in Critical Reasoning
  • Review percentage, ratio, and rate calculations until they can be solved quickly without a calculator
  • Practice reading tables, bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts for rapid data extraction
  • Study mean, median, and mode calculation from raw data sets and from visual graphs
  • Review algebra fundamentals: solving linear equations, inequalities, and basic substitution
  • Practice geometry essentials: area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles, and circles; basic angle rules
  • Build speed with timed Quantitative Reasoning drills — accuracy under time pressure is the key differentiator
  • Review ISAT score ranges published by your target university program so you know what to aim for
