✍️ Sample IMSA Questions & Answers
1. Which of the following is a linear function?
✓ f(x) = 2x + 5
f(x) = 2x + 5 is linear because the variable x has an exponent of 1.
2. A box contains 20 items: 8 defective and 12 good. If 2 are randomly tested, what is the probability both are good (without replacement)?
✓ 66/190
P = (12/20) × (11/19) = 132/380 = 66/190.
3. If 5 workers can complete a job in 12 days, how many days will 10 workers take to complete the same job?
✓ 6
This is an inverse proportion: 5 × 12 = 10 × x, so x = 6 days.
4. What is the domain of f(x) = 1/(x − 3)?
✓ All real numbers except x = 3
The function is undefined when the denominator equals zero, i.e., when x = 3.
5. What does a negative slope indicate about a line?
✓ The line falls from left to right
A negative slope means that as x increases, y decreases, so the line falls from left to right.
6. What does the graph of y = x² look like?
✓ A parabola opening upward
y = x² is a quadratic equation whose graph is a U-shaped parabola opening upward.
