Simulate test conditions from day one. The ieGAT is a timed, high-pressure assessment. Before you open the PDF, clear your workspace, silence your phone, and set a timer. Aim to allocate approximately 60–75 seconds per question across all sections. Working at this pace from the beginning trains you to make fast, confident decisions — a skill that takes weeks to develop and cannot be built in last-minute cramming sessions.
Section-by-section or full-test practice. Depending on how much time you have available, you can either work through the entire PDF in one sitting or tackle one section at a time. If you are early in your preparation, section-focused practice is more efficient because it allows you to concentrate on a single skill area. Score by section, not just in total. Once you have finished the PDF and graded your answers, break down your score by section. The ieGAT has four distinct components, and your weaknesses in one area will not be offset by strength in another — each section matters. Pattern recognition in your mistakes — for example, consistently misreading double-negatives in verbal questions, or miscalculating percentage changes in numerical questions — points directly to the drills you need to run.

Scoring well on the ieGAT requires a tailored approach to each of its four sections. Here is what you need to know about each component and the specific skills it tests.
Verbal Reasoning: The verbal section presents short reading passages — typically two to five paragraphs — followed by questions about the main idea, author's tone, logical inferences, and the strength of arguments. You are not expected to bring outside knowledge; every correct answer can be derived from the passage itself. The most common error candidates make is choosing an answer that sounds plausible from general knowledge but is not directly supported by the text. Practice reading critically rather than receptively — always ask "what does this passage actually say?" rather than "what do I already believe about this topic?"
Numerical Reasoning: Tables, bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts form the basis of the numerical section. Each question requires you to extract data, apply a mathematical operation (percentages, ratios, averages, growth rates), and select the correct result. Because no calculator is allowed, mental arithmetic fluency is essential. Brush up on percentage increase/decrease formulas, fraction-to-decimal conversions, and compound growth calculations. Speed matters as much as accuracy — wrong answers from running out of time are just as costly as incorrect calculations.
Logical and Abstract Reasoning: These questions present series of shapes, figures, or symbol grids and ask you to identify the underlying pattern and select the next element or the missing piece. Common pattern types include rotations, reflections, size changes, color alternations, and counting rules. There is no vocabulary or arithmetic involved — pure spatial and pattern-recognition thinking is being tested. The best preparation is volume: work through as many pattern sequence questions as you can find to develop an instinct for spotting rules quickly.
English Language Proficiency: Grammar, vocabulary-in-context, and reading comprehension questions assess whether your English is strong enough for IE's English-medium programs. Native English speakers can expect this section to feel straightforward. Non-native speakers should pay particular attention to sentence correction questions involving subject-verb agreement, verb tense consistency, and idiomatic expressions. Reading academic and business English texts daily in the weeks before the exam is one of the most effective ways to raise your score in this section.
