OCCT 5th grade science – what does it actually test and how should we prep at home?

My daughter's 5th grade teacher sent home a note that they'll be taking the OCCT science assessment in about 6 weeks and recommended we do some review at home. The problem is the guidance was pretty general – review earth science and life science concepts – and I'm not sure what the OCCT actually tests at that grade level or how in-depth it goes.

She's generally a strong student, scoring around 80–85% on her classroom science tests this year, but standardized test formats sometimes trip her up. We have about an hour a week outside of school that we can realistically dedicate to any kind of exam-specific prep without burning her out on it.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether we should be working from the Oklahoma Academic Standards documents, the OCCT practice materials from the state, or just reinforcing whatever they've been doing in class. I don't want to introduce content she hasn't seen yet and confuse her, but I also don't want to miss something heavily weighted on the assessment.

Does the OCCT science at grade 5 have a heavy reading component embedded in the science questions or is it mostly straightforward knowledge recall?

Don't introduce new content this close to the test if she's already solid in class. Reinforcing what she knows and building comfort with standardized question formats will do more for her score than cramming topics she hasn't covered yet. Confidence matters a lot on these assessments at this age.

Earth and space science gets tested pretty heavily at 5th grade in Oklahoma – weather patterns, the water cycle, and solar system basics show up consistently. Life science questions tend to focus on ecosystems and adaptations. Physical science is the lightest weight of the three in my experience with this assessment.

For a kid scoring 80-85% in class, the main risk on the OCCT is the format, not the content. Spend most of your prep time on the released practice test items so she's comfortable with how questions are phrased and the multiple-choice structure. An hour a week is plenty if it's focused on format familiarity.

OCCT 5th grade science pulls from the Oklahoma Academic Standards for 5th grade – physical science, life science, and earth and space science are all represented. The Oklahoma State Department of Education website has released practice tests that are the most accurate preview of the actual format and they're free to access. At grade 5 there's definitely a reading comprehension component built in – passages with data tables or diagrams are common and kids have to interpret them alongside knowing the content.
