How much does NREMT actually matter to employers right now?

I've been doing a lot of searching on "nremt" and while the certification looks solid on paper, I'm getting mixed signals about how much employers actually care in 2026.

Some job postings list it as required, some say "preferred," and some don't mention it at all even for roles where it seems relevant.

For those of you who have your NREMT certification — has it actually opened doors or increased your rate? Or has the job market shifted to the point where it's table stakes rather than a differentiator?

Context: I'm entering the field and trying to decide whether to prioritize NREMT or invest the same time into firefighter salary.

Also — how current does the cert need to be? If I pass now, is a 2-3 year old cert still valuable or do employers want recent?

Quick data point: I spent 5 weeks studying, 1-3 hours a day, and passed with a 86%.

The section on firefighter salary took me the longest to feel confident about. Eventually I just drilled practice questions until I could answer them without hesitation.

What testing center did you end up booking? Some of them have much shorter wait times than others right now.

Passed NREMT 2 months ago. Happy to share what I remember.

On the "firefighter salary" stuff specifically — I found the practice tests here were actually harder than the real exam on those questions. Which was great because going in I felt more prepared than I needed to be.

The time pressure is real though. I came in with maybe 8 minutes to spare and that was after skipping the ones I wasn't sure about and coming back.

Don't try to cram the night before. Seriously. Last-minute stress makes you second-guess things you actually know.
