Finally passed my CrossFit Level 1 after two attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my results back and I finally passed the CF-L1 written exam on my second attempt. First time I went in pretty cocky thinking I could just wing it because I'd been doing CrossFit for three years. Scored a 68 and needed a 70. Absolutely gutting.

This time I actually treated it seriously. I spent about three weeks going through the CrossFit Level 1 Training Guide cover to cover, focusing hard on the movement standards, energy systems, and the nutrition section which absolutely wrecked me the first time. I also found a CROSSFIT practice test online that helped me understand how the questions are actually worded — they love to ask about movement faults and coaching cues in really specific ways. The study guide paired with timed practice questions made a huge difference.

For anyone else preparing: don't underestimate the theory sections. The practical stuff at the seminar is one thing, but the written test expects you to know your Krebs cycle basics, rep schemes, and the hierarchy of athlete development. Happy to share my exam tips if anyone's gearing up for a seminar soon.

Congrats! I'm taking mine in six weeks and honestly this is exactly what I needed to read. I made the same mistake assuming field experience would carry me. Which sections did you find tripped people up most? I keep hearing the nutrition and energy systems questions are written in a weirdly clinical way compared to how coaches actually talk about that stuff day to day.

The movement standards section is no joke. I passed first attempt but only because a coach at my box drilled me on the nine foundational movements for two weeks straight. Knowing the difference between a fault that's a safety issue versus just inefficient movement — that distinction comes up a lot. Also read the section on scaling more carefully than you think you need to.

Two attempts is actually really common, people just don't post about it. The pass rate isn't as high as CrossFit implies. You put in the work the second time and it showed. Good luck with the seminar practical component if you haven't done that part yet!
