CF-L1 exam tips - passed with a 90%, here's what I actually focused on

I got back from my CrossFit Level 1 seminar weekend about two weeks ago and received my results earlier this week - 90% on the written exam. The weekend itself was exhausting in the best way; we did two full days of coaching, movement practice, and classroom sessions. By Sunday afternoon my brain was pretty fried but I felt ready going into the test.

The written exam is 50 multiple choice questions and you've got to score 70% or higher to pass, so 35 correct minimum. I'd say about 30-35% of the questions were on the 9 foundational movements - squat, front squat, overhead squat, shoulder press, push press, push jerk, deadlift, sumo deadlift high pull, and medicine ball clean. Know the virtuosity and mechanics of each cold before you go in.

There were also a good number of questions on CrossFit's methodology and principles - the theoretical hierarchy of development, the definition of fitness, how they approach programming. These sound abstract but they appear almost verbatim from the Level 1 training guide. I read through the guide twice the week before the seminar and it paid off on those conceptual questions.

Don't skip the nutrition section. I almost did because the coaches didn't spend much time on it during the seminar, but there were probably 6-7 questions on macronutrient ratios, the Zone diet, and dietary guidelines. That section is quick to read and easy to retain if you go through it once carefully.

Congrats! 90% is awesome. I passed mine in March with a 76% and the foundational movement questions were exactly what you described - very mechanics focused, not just naming the movements.

The nutrition section surprised me too. I definitely underprepared for it.

Flashcards on the 9 movements in the weeks before the seminar are really useful. Being able to recall cue progressions and common faults cold meant I could focus on the experiential learning during the weekend instead of trying to absorb everything for the first time.

The weekend is demanding but they build in enough recovery between sessions. You won't be so wrecked you can't think straight - the bigger challenge is information overload from so much coaching feedback all at once.

Get a good night's sleep between day 1 and day 2 and you'll be fine for the exam.

How physically intense was the weekend? I'm signed up for one in July and worried I'll be too worn out to focus on the written portion on day 2.
