Just got my results back last week and I passed with an 84%. I've been managing a community pool for two seasons without the cert and finally buckled down to get it done. Total study time was probably around 18 hours spread over 3 weeks, mostly evenings after work. Wanted to share what helped since I saw a lot of people struggling with the same sections I was nervous about.
The chemistry sections on pH, chlorine demand, and cyanuric acid levels are where most people lose points. I made flashcards for every chemical range and tested myself daily. By the end I could recall the ideal pH range (7.4–7.6) and breakpoint chlorination ratios without thinking. Working through a CPO practice test mid-study was really useful for spotting exactly which chemistry topics I was shaky on before they cost me on exam day.
The hydraulics and filtration sections felt dense at first but they follow logical patterns once you understand flow rates and turnover. Draw diagrams if you're a visual learner — I drew the same recirculation system about 15 times until it stuck. The legal and ADA compliance piece was the easiest for me since it's mostly straightforward rules.
Did you find the exam matched the official PHTA study guide pretty closely? I'm taking mine in 4 weeks and I'm not sure if I need additional materials or if sticking to the official content is enough.
The official guide covers everything you need. I didn't use anything else and passed with an 88%. Just make sure you understand the concepts instead of memorizing answers — they word questions differently than the practice materials sometimes.
Congrats! Chemistry was my nemesis too. I failed the first time mostly because I kept mixing up combined chlorine and free chlorine thresholds. Second attempt I drilled those daily and went from a 69% to an 81%.
The flashcard approach for chemical ranges is solid advice. I did the same thing and it took maybe 20 minutes a day but made a massive difference. Those numbers show up everywhere on the exam, not just in the chemistry section.
