Failed CPO exam twice — what finally helped me pass on attempt three

I've been a pool operator for about six years but never bothered getting certified until my new employer made it a requirement. Figured it'd be easy since I already knew the job. Wrong. Failed the first attempt with a 68 (need 75 to pass), studied a little more, failed again with a 71. I was genuinely embarrassed.

What changed for third attempt: I stopped just rereading the NSPF manual and actually started doing timed CPO practice test questions every single day for three weeks. The repetition forced me to actually remember the chemical dosing calculations instead of just recognizing them on the page. Big difference between recognition and recall.

Also focused hard on the areas I kept missing — water balance (Langelier index especially), chlorine chemistry, and the health code stuff around fecal incident response. If anyone else is struggling, happy to share what study materials I used. Passed with an 82 on try three.

The fecal incident response procedure questions are pure memorization — contamination levels, closure times, chlorine shock levels for formed vs. diarrheal incidents. Make flashcards. Seriously. That section is very testable and super straightforward once you've drilled it enough.

The Langelier Saturation Index trips up so many people. I teach CPO prep classes and honestly half my students bomb that section first time through. My advice: don't just memorize the formula, work through 20-30 practice calculations until it feels automatic. Same with the cyanuric acid stabilizer relationship with free chlorine. Those two topics alone probably account for 20% of exam questions. Congrats on passing — three attempts shows real persistence.

Did you use any specific CPO study guide or mostly the official NSPF materials? I'm scheduled for my exam in about five weeks and I'm honestly nervous about the chemical calculations. Math was never my strong suit and I keep reading that the test is heavier on that stuff than people expect. Also did you find the actual exam harder or easier than the practice questions you were doing?
