CRL Exam Fast Facts

What the CRL Exam Covers

The CRL examination tests practical locksmithing knowledge across multiple domains. Here is a breakdown of the key subject areas you must master:

Key Cutting and Duplication

You need to understand key identification, key blank selection from standard catalogues, and how key code systems work. Questions cover key duplicating machine setup, depth and space settings, and recognizing when a key has been cut incorrectly.

Lock Mechanisms

Expect questions on pin tumbler locks — including driver pins, key pins, the shear line, and spring function. The exam also covers wafer tumbler locks, disc tumbler locks, tubular locks, and lever tumbler locks. You must be able to identify components from diagrams and explain how each mechanism operates.

Door Hardware

This domain covers mortise locks, cylindrical and bored locks, rim devices, deadbolts, strike plates, and door closers. Know the difference between ANSI grades and where each hardware type is appropriate.

Masterkeying Systems

Understand the full masterkey hierarchy: change keys, master keys, grandmaster keys, and cross keying. Know the TMK levels and how to read and build a masterkey schematic. Cross keying conflicts are a common exam trap.

Rekeying Procedures

Questions test your ability to select pin kit components, follow pin combination codes, and correctly install springs during a rekey. Speed and accuracy with a plug follower are implied competencies.

Opening Techniques

The CRL covers picking (single pin picking and rake picking), bypassing methods (shimming padlocks, loid attacks on spring latches), and impressioning — the process of creating a working key from a blank by marking and filing. Each method has ethical and legal limits the exam expects you to know.

Automotive Locksmithing Basics

Candidates need familiarity with HPC code books, automotive key cutting procedures, and basic transponder key awareness. Full transponder programming is beyond CRL scope but you must recognize transponder components.

Safe Basics

Know the components of a combination lock: dial, spindle, cam, drive cam, and bolt. Understand UL ratings for safes and the common non-destructive opening methods locksmiths use.

Laws, Regulations, and Business Practices

Licensing requirements vary by state — the CRL exam tests general awareness of legal obligations, prohibited services, ethics in key duplication record-keeping, job quoting, and material estimation. Professional conduct questions appear on every exam form.
