CPTD Exam Domain Breakdown

The CPTD exam tests three interconnected domains drawn from the ATD Capability Model. Understanding the scope of each domain is essential for efficient study planning.

Building Personal Capability

This domain covers the professional competencies that underpin effective TD work: personal branding and continuous learning, emotional intelligence, cultural competence, and ethical behavior. It also includes project management fundamentals and technology application in a learning context โ€” how you manage yourself and your craft as a practitioner.

Developing Professional Practice

The largest and most technically dense domain. Instructional design frameworks including ADDIE, SAM, and backward design are core exam topics. You will also be tested on learning technology selection and implementation, evaluation models (Kirkpatrick Four Levels and the Phillips ROI Methodology), change management, organizational development principles, and coaching and mentoring frameworks. This domain demands both conceptual understanding and practical application.

Impacting Organizational Capability

This domain addresses the strategic business impact of talent development. Key topics include performance consulting (needs analysis, root cause analysis, gap analysis), business acumen and financial literacy for L&D leaders, data and analytics for learning decisions, organizational development interventions, diversity equity and inclusion in TD, and workforce planning for the future of work. Expect scenario-based questions that ask you to diagnose organizational problems and recommend appropriate TD solutions.

How many questions are on the CPTD exam?

The CPTD exam contains 155 total items: 150 scored multiple-choice questions and 5 unscored pretest items that ATD uses to evaluate future exam questions. You will not know which items are unscored, so treat every question with equal care. The time limit is 3.5 hours, giving you roughly 1 minute 21 seconds per question on average.

What is the difference between CPTD and APTD?

The APTD (Associate Professional in Talent Development) is ATD's entry-level credential, designed for professionals with 2 years of experience and covering a narrower scope of the Capability Model. The CPTD is the advanced credential, requiring 5 years of full-time TD experience and testing across all three domains of the full ATD Capability Model. The CPTD demonstrates senior-level competency and is broadly recognized as the premier credential in the talent development profession.

What experience is required to sit for the CPTD?

ATD requires either 5 years of full-time professional experience in talent development with no degree requirement, or 3 years of full-time professional TD experience combined with a bachelor's degree or higher. Experience must be in a TD role โ€” designing, delivering, managing, or evaluating learning and development programs. ATD verifies eligibility as part of the application process.

How is the CPTD exam scored?

The CPTD uses a scaled scoring methodology rather than a simple percentage. ATD does not publish a single universal passing score because scaled scoring adjusts for slight variations in exam difficulty across test forms. Your result is reported as pass or fail. Scaled scoring is standard practice for professional certification exams and ensures consistent standards regardless of which version of the exam you receive.
