CPT Observation and Assessment Practices Questions and Answers 1

Question 1

A preschool teacher notices that a child frequently pushes other children to get a desired toy. To understand how often this specific behavior occurs, which of the following observation methods would be most effective?

Accepted Answer

Frequency count

Answer

A frequency count is a method used to tally the number of times a specific, predefined behavior occurs within a set period. This method is ideal for quantifying a behavior like pushing to determine its prevalence and plan an appropriate intervention. Running records and anecdotal records are narrative-based and less efficient for tracking a single, repeated action. A work sample is irrelevant for observing social behavior.

Question 2

Which of the following best describes the primary goal of authentic assessment in a preschool setting?

Accepted Answer

To gather information about a child's skills and progress in their natural learning environment over time.

Answer

Authentic assessment involves observing and documenting a child's abilities during everyday activities and routines. Its main purpose is to create a holistic picture of the child's development in a familiar context, which informs curriculum planning and supports individual growth. It is not about standardized scores, grades, or immediate diagnosis.

Question 3

A teacher has documented several observations about a child's progress in social-emotional development. What is the most ethically appropriate way to share this information?

Accepted Answer

Scheduling a private conference with the child's family to discuss the findings.

Answer

Ethical guidelines require that assessment information be kept confidential and shared only with those who have a legitimate need to know, primarily the child's family. A private conference ensures privacy, respects the family, and allows for a collaborative conversation. Sharing with other parents, posting publicly, or emailing broadly violates confidentiality.

Question 4

During a 10-minute free play period, a teacher writes down everything a child says and does in a detailed, sequential, and objective narrative written in the present tense. Which observation technique is the teacher using?

Accepted Answer

Running record

Answer

A running record is a detailed, moment-by-moment account of a child's behavior recorded as it happens. It is written in the present tense and aims to be as objective and descriptive as possible, capturing the sequence of events. Time sampling involves recording behavior at specific intervals, while checklists and rating scales are used to note the presence or quality of specific skills rather than a continuous narrative.

Question 5

To ensure observations are objective and free from bias, a teacher must be most mindful of which of the following?

Accepted Answer

Personal feelings, assumptions, and cultural stereotypes.

Answer

Objective observation requires recording only the facts of what is seen and heard, without interpretation or judgment. Teachers must be self-aware and actively work to prevent their personal feelings, cultural background, or preconceived notions from influencing their descriptions of a child's behavior. While other factors are part of the context, overcoming personal bias is critical for objectivity.
