What the CASAS is and how it works
According to CASAS, “C Forms 925R - 926R 36 70 minutes 217 - 238”[1]
CASAS assessments are used in adult education programs to measure the reading, math and listening skills of adult learners. CASAS says Reading GOALS 2 is for Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE) learners. You do not sign up for it the way you would for a public exam. Your program gives it to you, and programs need CASAS Implementation Training before they can offer it.
How it is delivered. Reading GOALS 2 comes as CASAS eTests on a computer or as paper booklets. Your program decides which one you take.
Form lengths and time limits (Reading GOALS 2):
- Locator (Form 920R): 14 items, 20 minutes
- Appraisal (Form 919R): 28 items, 30 minutes
- Level C (Forms 925R-926R): 36 items, 70 minutes
CASAS also publishes other levels and forms. Check casas.org for the one you will take.
What varies. Programs, states and funding rules set how scores are used, which level you start at and when you are tested again. Ask your program's testing coordinator about these rules, and use the official CASAS product pages for current form details. This page does not replace them.

Worked examples: how to reason through CASAS questions
These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.
Example 1
Question: How long is a CASAS Math Goals score valid for measuring a learner’s ability?
- 6 months
- 1 year
- 2 years
- Indefinitely
Answer: C. 2 years
Explanation:
The keyed answer is C. 2 years. The idea behind it is that a score only describes a learner's skills at the time of testing. Skills change with study, or fade without practice, so an old score stops being a fair basis for placement. A. 6 months and B. 1 year are shorter than the period this item uses. D. Indefinitely is wrong because no assessment score stays current forever. Keep in mind that states and programs write their own testing policies, and those can set a different window or require earlier retesting. The rule to remember is that a placement score expires, and you should ask your program which window applies to you.
Example 2
Question: How can diagnostic assessments help adult learners?
- They identify students' strengths and areas for improvement.
- They are only used for grading purposes.
- They measure students’ attendance.
- They assess students' emotional well-being.
Answer: A. They identify students' strengths and areas for improvement.
Explanation:
The answer is A. A diagnostic assessment shows what a learner can already do and where the gaps are, so teaching can start at the right point. B is wrong because diagnostic results guide teaching, not just grading. Grading a finished unit is the job of a summative test. C is wrong because attendance is a record the program keeps, not a skill a test measures. D is wrong because an academic diagnostic looks at skills such as reading or math, not emotional well-being. The rule to remember is that diagnostic testing comes before or during instruction and answers one question: what does this learner need next?
Example 3
Question: Which CASAS assessment is designed to place learners into the appropriate instructional level before instruction begins?
- Progress test
- Appraisal test
- Summative test
- Diagnostic interview
Answer: B. Appraisal test
Explanation:
The answer is B. Appraisal test. CASAS lists appraisal forms separately from its level tests, and the appraisal is used before instruction to find a suitable starting level. A. Progress test is wrong because a progress test is given after some instruction to measure gains. C. Summative test is wrong because summative tests judge learning at the end of a unit or course, not at the start. D. Diagnostic interview can give a teacher useful background, but it is not the CASAS placement test. The rule to remember is: appraisal places you, progress tests measure change, and summative tests check what was learned at the end.
How to use these practice tests
Start with the official details. Ask your program which CASAS test and level you will take, and whether you will test on a computer or on paper. Read that test's product page on casas.org so you know how many items it has and how long you get.
Take a baseline. Do the starter practice test without notes. Write down which question types slowed you down or tricked you.
Work by skill. For reading, rotate through Reading Comprehension, Functional Literacy, Critical Thinking and Expand Vocabulary. For math, use Math Goals. Read the explanation for every question you miss, and every question you guessed on.
Practise under time. Once your accuracy is steady, set a timer that matches your form's official time limit and do a full set in one sitting.
Before test day. If you will test on a computer, ask whether your program has a sample eTest so the screen layout is familiar. Sleep well, bring what your program tells you to bring, and read each question to the end before you choose an answer.
