- New content outline in force since August 1, 2025: the COA exam now spans 22 weighted content areas. Heaviest: History and Documentation (9%), Ophthalmic Patient Services and Education (8%), General Medical Knowledge (8%), Visual Assessment (7%), Pupil Assessment (7%), Tonometry (7%). (source)
- Format unchanged for 2026: 200 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes (3 hours). (source)
- 2026 fees: $300 initial COA exam; $250 first retest; $150 second retest; optional COA Practice Examination $150 (plus $150 to convert a passed practice exam into certification). Rush processing $50; cancellation keeps a $75 non-refundable portion. (source)
- Delivery is Pearson VUE, not Prometric: test at a Pearson VUE center or online via OnVUE remote proctoring, which IJCAHPO offers for the COA and CRT exams only (Pearson VUE page last updated June 9, 2026). (source)
- Testing window: no fixed exam dates. Once approved you get a 90-day eligibility period to schedule and sit the exam; one 30-day extension is allowed for $50. (source)
- Eligibility (2026): A1 graduates of an ICA-accredited clinical program (no hours required); A2 non-clinical/distance program plus 500 supervised hours in the prior 12 months; A3 high-school diploma plus the JCAT or AAO Ophthalmic Medical Assisting independent study course plus 1,000 supervised hours in the prior 12 months. - Scoring: IJCAHPO reports only pass/fail. Candidates receive a Performance Report by content area at the test center but never see a numeric score; official results are mailed 2 to 4 weeks after testing. Two retest applications may be filed within 12 months of the first attempt. (source)
- Recertification: certification is valid 36 months; COA renewal needs 18 IJCAHPO CE credits (at least 12 from IJCAHPO-approved courses; AMA/CMA Category 1 CME is not accepted for COAs) and a $125 fee, with an $85 late fee inside 12 months past the date. Retesting in lieu of CE is permitted. (source)
